Al Washington (Potential DC)

It will be interesting to see whom the new defensive coordinator is on Wednesday night when Heupel announces his staff.

Based on where we are right now, we need a developer of talent vs. an "ace" recruiter. IMO.

Just talked with my sports chief here in Columbus. Word on campus is Washington is meeting with Ryan Day and the OSU AD this afternoon to talk about his future. The general feeling is he might leave to come to Tennessee because having the chance to be a coordinator is too big a deal to pass up (given activism about the lack of minority coaches and coordinators in the sport). Washington is from Columbus and played at Bishop Watterson High School (when they won a state championship in 2002). He was a 3 star DT recruit who had offers from Boston College, Miami of Ohio and Wake Forrest out of HS. Washington's dad played for Woody Hayes in the late 70s but coaching at OSU was never his dream gig.

My big mouth friend that's a huge OSU fan, did I mention he's a big mouth? He was telling me today, while laughing at the possibility of Washington leaving OSU to come to Tennessee, that he (Washington) turned down a HC offer at Boston College. I didn't ask when this was, but do you or anyone know anything about that?

There was some chatter in December 2019 that BC was courting OSU assistants for their head coaching gig. The job did indeed end up going to Jeff Hafley (who was their top choice all along). Outside of speculation in a Columbus Dispatch article, there wasn't much to connect Washington to the head coaching search. It wouldn't surprise me if Hafley considered bringing Washington along as a coordinator, but it obviously never happened.

Turned us down I'm hearing. What does that make? 8 or 9 now that's passed on us? So gratifying.
If he turned us down, you could bet OSU offered him a sweet gig and payday. One doesn't just turn down a DC position, having never held one and an opportunity to about double his payday.

Hey All, stop playing and help us get back to the top where we used to be. I'm mean we sit at #3 will All-Time number of Super Bowl players. We aren't rock bottom, but need a little help getting out the ditch.

Hiring a coach without DC experience is a HUGE mistake. I'd go down a division before I hire a position coach.

Rather have a young guy that relates to the players and learn on the job.......it’s not like UT is challenging for an SEC championship soon. Washington is a great recruiter as well.

He’s probably staying in Columbus anyway..

Not wanting to make this a race issue but hiring a young, intelligent, articulate, full of fire, black coordinator just makes sense. Would be a great response to big albert.
I just want young and full of piss and vinegar. No retreads that couldn’t cut it other schools.

I just want the best candidate available. The fact that we are already down to offering guys with no DC experience whatsoever, frankly scares me. I never expected us to hire the second coming of Buddy Ryan but Jesus Christ! You'd think SOMEBODY out there with experience would be interested in the job!

It’s gonna be someone with no DC experience, because nobody else wants the job. It’s risky, but I’d rather have a young “up-and-comer” that WANTS the job

JMO:)
If that's the case I'd rather us look at FCS before hiring someone with zero coordinator experience. We did that once before (Sunseri) and that was a disaster!

This is a nauseating take. You’re a nega- VOL. If you know so much you should call the coaches and tell them who to hire. I don’t actually mean a bit of this. I’m just enjoying quoting a couple of the crank Yankers I’ve encountered in this thread.

Just read in one of OSU news sites that UT offered him the DC position by at 1.5 million a year. He currently makes 1.1 million. Did not get the length of contract. This was verified by ABC news in Cleveland. Still no decision. The feeling is it could go either way at this point. Sounds like another coach will be getting a raise at our expense. UT should start charging a commission fee to all of these coaches. We have helped several get decent raises over the years.

You're right.

Some of these other programs haven't caught on yet. Just look at what Deion Sanders is doing at Jackson State (FCS and HBCU) It's a thing BECAUSE of the current climate. For better or worse.

I liked Ansley....beside him not being able to adjust enough. He was solid. Our trash offense made our defense look worse than it was.
