GSU's Fobbs calls for stoppage of workouts as COVID-19 cases rise in college football
One coach with brains.
One coach with brains.
Not that it says much about the Fall, but today TN posted its highest day-over-day increase in new cases.
What would happen in the middle of the Major League Baseball season if five players for one team test positive for COVID-19? Or during the National Basketball League or National Hockey League seasons, for that matter?
More than 13,000 athletes participate in the top subdivision of college football. Most of those players are younger than 23 and in prime physical condition, which means they’re part of the group said to be least at risk of serious coronavirus complications.
So here’s my first question:
How many of those 13,000 players would we have to lose for us to decide that the risk is unacceptable?
One out of 13,000? Two? Ten?
Noted SEC media expert Paul Finebaum questioned how honest college football coaches will be in the face of a pandemic, and whether they’d be inclined to bury positive COVID-19 tests during rivalry week or before a huge game. He said the sport is “rife with lying and cheating and fraudulence and deception.”
Heavy, ugly words. And on Thursday night, they all came true.
The Los Angeles Times reports that 30 UCLA players do not trust their school to act in their best interests. They demanded that a “third-party health official” be on hand for all football activities to ensure that UCLA is following COVID-19 protocols.
Folks, here's the thing. As things start to open back up naturally there will be more cases, there are 3 things to keep an eye on
1. Positivity rate, we're testing a lot more people than we were a month ago. Florida did 40K test yesterday.
2. Hospitalization rate, which has decreased significantly across the country. Bed use appears to be up right now but it really isn't because hospitals are now taking in elective procedures, etc.
3. Most importantly the death rate, it continues to go down and will continue to go down.
So, yes you can report every single case that comes across Twitter or you can live your life, be smart, wash your hands and if you're sick then stay home.
Good night to all and all a good night
