Flood expresses concern for FCS football players during pandemic

Flood is worried about schools outside the Power 5 for the upcoming sports year, but as for the entire country, the former player doesn’t think it’s possible for players to avoid the virus. The recent positive test results for coronavirus on college campuses, such as LSU and Clemson, give Flood cause for concern.

“It’s really off-putting that schools like the University of Texas or Clemson, schools with unlimited resources, are having issues keeping their players and their student athletes protected from COVID. What happens with Southern, Southeastern, Jackson State? How are they going to keep their student athletes safe?” Flood added.

I just don’t understand all the panic... isn’t this what we expected to happen? We knew that some players would test positive when returning to campus. I just don’t understand why you’re acting like this is totally unexpected. At some point we have to move on with our lives because this virus isn’t going away until we figure out a vaccine; if we can create a vaccine. I get that football isn’t essential but obviously these players are still catching it without playing football.

College Football Hit by Coronavirus

Billy Hawkins, a professor in the department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Houston who studies college sports and social change, would like to see college football suspended. "Obviously, there's the economic motive that’s making the decisions," he said. "Clearly, they aren’t listening to health officials, because I don’t think there’s any indication from health officials saying that it’s OK to gather in these types of settings where there’s obviously close contact and not expect to incur some cases of COVID-19. We see the desperation of a lot of these programs trying to get back up and running because football is a multimillion-dollar industry for some institutions and for the NCAA in general it’s a multibillion-dollar industry."

Progress toward having college football season 'hit a roadblock'

"And, I mean, we’ve all hearing the same things, I mean the numbers are are enormous across the country, even in Alabama. I’ve heard double digits at Auburn, double digits at Alabama. Should this be expected? I thought they would be handfuls at every school, I didn’t think the numbers would be this big. And this is without anyone on campus. These are fairly controlled environments. And I think the big story, it may not be so much about college football but what are the odds of students getting back on campus if this is the circumstance?

“College sports can always control things a lot better than the normal population. The only issue here is, unless you quarantine players, which you can’t really do on a college campus, this is not going away.”

New Zealand has resumed sporting events with in person crowds, soccer matches are resuming in Spain and Germany. These countries understood that short term sacrifices (economic, social, etc) would allow them to bring the outbreak under control and begin to resume some semblance of normal national life sooner. The same cannot be in our country.
