BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Faith, family, and football - it’s what so many people live by in the south, but doctors warn we may not have a football season if COVID numbers continue to trend up.

“The football season is really in jeopardy to some degree,” said Dr. Michael Sagg, UAB.

Doctors warn COVID cases aren’t leveling off as we countdown to kick off - even as coaches prepare for the upcoming season and players start the voluntary workouts.

on recent outbreaks of COVID-19 in CFB. "This was inevitable. We knew the numbers were going to blow up. When you get large numbers of people together, there’s a high probability numbers are going to boom. That’s what you’re seeing in college football.”

“When was the last time that anybody in sports had to look at the reality that they weren’t going to make more money next year? It has built up almost without interruption for 30-40 years, depending on which sport you’re talking about.” --

Multiple NFL teams want start of 2020 season pushed back

As of Sunday, nearly a third of NFL teams reported at least one positive COVID-19 test.

Alarmingly, we are also seeing how quickly the coronavirus can spread with several organizations reporting multiple cases. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are confirmed to have multiple cases and the Denver Broncos had at least two players test positive for COVID-19. In Texas, the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans each had multiple players contract the coronavirus.

There were already some within the NFL supporting a delayed start to the regular season. Now, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the voices for pushing back the season are growing even louder.

“That’s the first place you have to start,” one team executive said, via Sports Illustrated. “I’m big on pushing back.”

Major League Baseball plans to unilaterally issue a 60-game schedule The Players Union "announced its rejection, and the vote total was confirmed by a person familiar with that meeting who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the balloting was not made public."

“It’s absolute death for this industry to keep acting as it has been. Both sides,” Cincinnati pitcher Trevor Bauer tweeted in a rare instance of a player criticizing the union. “We’re driving the bus straight off a cliff. How is this good for anyone involved? Covid 19 already presented a lose lose lose situation and we’ve somehow found a way to make it worse. Incredible.”
