Alex Thomson - Wagner QB (Grad Transfer)

There is no depth chart at any position. New coaching staff and new system with new eyes looking at a roster that went 4-8 last season.

Tell that to TS. His spot is guaranteed unless he has an injury. You don't mess with Freshman All Americans.

I don't follow ISU well enough to know what they have. I have seen enough of JG this past season to say I don't think he has the job sewed up by any stretch. He showed remarkable immaturity for a 2nd year player both before and after he became the starter. He did not demonstrate a mastery of the mental part of the game that you'd expect of a 2nd year player either. That would seem to either reflect inability, a lack of work, or both.

He has to grow up AND work his tail off. If Thomson has an NFL arm, polish, and maturity... he shouldn't be afraid of competing with JG.

It’s an UNKNOWN factor that he has to take into consideration. It’s not about being “afraid”. It’s about doing your research and hedging your bets. Why “compete” when you can avoid it? I hope we land this kid, just seeing the big picture where we may not.

So if you watched Tennessee's 2017 game tape. What would scare you about competing against Guarantano for the starting QB job? I would argue not a thing

I'm betting differently. My guess is he would be brought in to compete at TN immediately.

A dude that was worse or about even in almost every category as a Jr in FCS, than JG vs a bunch of FBS bowl and SEC teams as a Fr is not going to come in and compete for his job.

We need more bodies in the qb room and some emergency injury options though.

If we had to argue, I’d say you can’t judge ANY player on the roster by last season.

You just made my point. Everyone is on equal footing. No depth charts. No nothing

I’ll go with evaluations on their potential before that abortion of a season. And compare it to what Campbell did with his far lesser ranked roster. Thomson can’t even apply for the medical redshirt until AFTER this upcoming season. Without that certainty he’s going to want the best stage for the best showcase of his skills. With no goggles on, which of these rosters display that? He could be a surprise success factor for us this season, so I hope he decides that answer is ours.

JG posted good stats running a very simplified playbook that allowed him to take almost no risks at all.

None of the good grad transfers are going to listen to a coach that wants them for nothing but a back up. And the last thing a new coach following a coach that players had grown not to trust wants to do... is start out by deceiving someone about why they're being recruited.

I doubt you’ll hear anything until well after NSD.

Regarding your first sentence 18, that’s one way to look at it. Here’s another.....he posted good stats running a middle school offense, as a freshman, with no coaching whatsoever, behind an all-time awful OL, with limited to poor options at TE and WR.

All this checks out as accurate.
