Aliens

you know they did those artist representations after they found planets worth considering. They found planets in the habitable zones and then analyzed the light through their atmospheres. the mere fact they have atmospheres is a good first sign. then they look for the right mix of gasses. there are hundreds they have rejected before they have released any thing saying these were capable of supporting life.

siap.

There is no evidence of life-sustaining atmosphere or any way to measure gasses 500 light years away.

I just want to be able to travel through space, hopefully without having to go through an anal probe first.

Hopefully, TSA won't be a part of space travel.

TSA screening techniques, proof that the govt knows about alien existence and has picked up some pointers on how to make their searches as invasive as possible.

You want an anal probe without the benefit of travelling through space?

I meant in the future someone will wish they could get the anal probe without having to travel through space. May not be me, necessarily.

lol, science is an amazing thing

Atmosphere: To learn a planet's atmosphere, we examine the spectrum of starlight passing through its atmosphere. Missing frequencies are clues, indicating elements or compounds that absorb light at those frequencies are present in the atmosphere. For example, if the light frequencies corresponding to methane and carbon monoxide are missing from an analysis of the starlight, the atmosphere contains methane and carbon monoxide, which absorbed the missing light.

In the Zone: How Scientists Search for Habitable Planets | NASA

its similar to burning different gasses and getting different color of flames.

and its relatively simple to figure out if a planet could be habitable, the difficulty is finding that planet in the first place. but once it has been pinpointed you start going through some basic check lists.

Is it in that stars habitable zone? That's based on the size and luminosity of the star. A big bright star's habitable zone will be further away than a small dull star.

Does that planet have an atmosphere, and is it big enough? Checked by seeing if that planet has a haze around it. and even if it does have a small layer that may be too little, signs of a weak magnetosphere or signs of an active star has already stripped it away, or is in the process. If it has a "strong" atmosphere that means the planet is protected from the extremes of the star and space.

Then what is the breakdown of that atmosphere? the process is described above in the link. Water vapor would be a huge thing to find because we know that works. and based on several species of bacteria here on earth it is possible life could evolve in other mediums. the question then is could intelligent life, thats a question you can't answer until we have explored everywhere. Who knows we might be the only world where life evolved from a world with liquid water and so the aliens out there aren't looking at us because we don't fit their mold to life.

Married your niece eh?

Ole boy here got busted with his 2nd cousin. He seemed upset. We told him if it bothered him that bad, stop counting them. :)

Really, his wife caught him with her. Whe he openly talks about it, I just turn down my radio.
