Aliens

Yes, and why guys like Musk are so important. He wants and is working toward Mars colonization. We start in this solar system and continuously advance the technologies developed to get/stay there.

We're likely to innovate more quickly when actively working toward a clear goal.

not sure why the government burned out on the prospect of space travel so fast. Kennedy's race to the moon in a decade? Since then we have pretty much lost the capability to make it even there yet alone anything beyond that. Glad we have people in the private sector willing and able to be that spark.

Government is too short sighted to mess with space. Kennedy himself was only interested in going to the moon to one up the Russians. Its a sad ****ing reality that the people in charge don't give a **** about the untapped potential.

Diminishing returns. Mars isn't realistically habitable, and the best prospect that might sustain life would take millions of years to reach with current technology.

Plus, we need to fund fruitless wars around the world and provide universal healthcare. Oops...wrong forum :)

This thread seems like an appropriate place to quote something our very own MockingVol wrote a couple years ago. I think it's a beautiful thought. I saved it and think about it from time to time.

"Out of all the substances and energies found in the entirety of the universe, life is surely the rarest."

Depends on what you consider rare. There are estimated to be roughly 200 billion galaxies in the known universe with an estimated amount of planets that number in the quintillions. Even if just .1% of those planets were Earth-like and habitable, we'd still be talking about a LOT of planets.

I don't see how anyone that believes in the big bang theory could be so sure that there aren't any other planets going through the process of evolution and thus supporting life in all its many facets.

Since we are guesstimating, what if just 0% of those planets were, in fact, earth-like and habitable? I believe the term "rare" is appropriate, since there is thus far no evidence of life outside of our planet and no conclusive evidence that any planet, even millions of years of travel away from us, is habitable.

Funny thing is, without revolutionary advancements in space-time travel, we will never know, as we (and likely our planet) will be long gone before even the nearest candidates can be reached.

dude the hyperbole isn't helping. Breakthrough Starshot aims for Alpha Centauri | Science Wire | EarthSky

Why haven’t we visited the Alpha Centauri system already? It’s because 25 trillion miles is a long, long way from here. Using existing technology, our fastest current spacecraft would require some 30,000 years to get there, said Breakthrough Starshot.

yes still a long long time, but this article covers another method a private investor is willing to test unmanned nano-craft (no idea what that means or the purpose of sending craft that small would be) that would take far less than the 30,000.

and even looking at the technology of today. New Horizons was supposed to go to just Pluto, now its heading to the Kupier belt far surpassing its intended mission and travel distance. even when it reaches the far far reaches of our solar system (est 2019) it still has another 10 years of battery life. and thats something the size of a grand piano. we don't know what we can do because we don't try.

and the earth like argument is just the argument for finding life as we know it. A point that is probably not valid as we have no idea of what life could be. and as far as humans finding it we are talking about colonies on Mars, I have already linked the Mars One stuff before. any effort to actually make it out there, without the massive, breaking the current rules of science (we have never done that before Speed of Sound, fission, going into space, etc), would definitely include colonizing other worlds along the way. Doing so would indefinitely extend the life expectancy of our species and remove our ties to this planet.

and look at any technology, ever. its only really made leaps and bounds as we have used it. yeah if we have widgets, space craft, we aren't invested in that widget will stay largely the same. we invest in said widget and suddenly the things that happen start stacking up. look at air rifles. invented in the 1700s and never really touched, and look at that it never went anywhere. while gunpowder weapons took off.

That video doesn't make sense. The guy claims the wind is blowing at 120 knots(138mph) to the west. I'm pretty sure you don't fly an F18 in a hurricane.

I’m no expert, so I could be wrong, but at that altitude I don’t think those kinds of winds are that crazy

Them talking to us would be like us talking to monkeys.

If we landed on a planet where monkeys were the dominant species would we try to open a dialog?
