Anarchy In Portland

At what point does the federal government have to act here if the local government cannot or will not?

Serious question, not sure I've ever seen anything quite like this before. The Pacific Northwest seems to be allowing and in some cases complicit by providing assistance to a movement using guerilla tactics against citizens, officers and the government.

Long past due.

As long as it stays contained to domestic actors, never. It's a local issue.

It can be argued they have already crossed that line. They are targeting federal agencies. If these were white supremacist groups or some separatist movement they would have been met with federal response by now. At least historically that was the case.

True, the feds pick and choose who they act against. Ideally they would stay the F out of all local issues.

In cases where these groups do their thing and leave other people alone I agree. But when they start targeting, harassing, intimidating and assaulting people there has to be a line. Not saying that's been crossed yet but there has to be a discussion about where that line is at some point.

If the local authorities don't or refuse to act then eventually they will be voted out or the citizens will act. Don't need the feds.

The citizens can't act in good faith if they fear retribution by the local government. Agreed on voting them out but that takes years to accomplish in some cases.

The damage the feds do also takes years (if ever) to recover from.

I'm sorry...but everyone of them need to have a bullet put though their head.

This would be a nice case for a very short 12 ga shotgun - have to be short (probably illegal). Nothing says you screwed with the wrong person than looking down the business end of something very large in caliber when a victim rolls down the window. Splatter a few of these guys around and they might think it's not that much fun after all. And I still really want an M-79 grenade launcher you need to send a "nothing but the best" message. This kind of thing will escalate until the fools get the message that the rest of us don't find it acceptable.

If they so much as slow traffic, the line was crossed.

As someone who has been on both the right and wrong side I can say with absolute certainty the sound of someone racking a shotgun is one of the most intimidating sounds there is.

Whole new level...Gotta say I cannot believe some bloodletting has not started already. Who know how it spreads.

It really bothers me to say so but if this sort of thing keeps becoming incrementally normalized by the cowardice of leadership there's going to be bloodshed.

Not justifying anything, but according to Hall the driver of the pickup this isn't the first time he has had a confrontation with marchers in PDX. Plus, according to Hall he had what I'd call a pellet gun, a concealed .38 and other guns in his pickup. Addiitionally, according to Hall, he did go towards the marchers with his .38 drawn. Doesn't sound completely innocent. Source: OregonLive

Doesn't matter, you obstruct someone from moving freely against their will that is considered false imprisonment, if it has happened to you before all the more reason to let you know they mean business.

Issue here is don't obstruct roads or streets, if you do you are the one instigating confrontation. Protest all you want, just don't infringe on others rights. Once you do you become the aggressor.

Perhaps he isn't totally innocent here, but he didn't start the chain of events.

Understood but rather irrelevant to my observation. If these interferences continue to expand in scope and militancy a violent counteraction is all but inevitable.

He's doing what the authorities should be doing. Vigilantism starts when legitimate law enforcement fails to act.

Who was that subway vigilante guy back in 70's in NYC? Richard Gertz or something like that.
