Andraya Carter’s playing future with Lady Vols in doubt because of knee pain

I say that to say, DD has won on every level but college. True, she was a "jumper" in AAU ... jumping from team to team to get to the natty's, but in the end, she performed and reached the title. And she was MVP on one of her teams and arguably the mvp on all 3 of them... So, what's different in college ball that she is struggling to get that elusive title... An in your face coach!

I have NO DOUBT whatsoever that if DD was coached, instead of idolized, she would perform much better. You can't let an athlete of that caliber get the better of you as a coach. Sometimes you have to show your charge that you are stronger than they are... I have had that situation before. I once told one of my 3-year players, "I built you, and I can build a better you... I know your strengths and I know your weaknesses. I know how to shut you down!"

All it took was this talk and a little extra attention to another player with her physical stature and prowess and she turned it around.

But to do this two things have to be.

1) You better be able to back up your coach-talk and sit your star and then start creating a new one in front of her
2) You better have a stronger belief in yourself than you have in the player.

I wish I could have taken this summer with Meme just so I could have proven this ...Only then would people understand what can be done with innate talent and innate drive, coupled with coaching experience and know-how. Given a summer with Meme, DD would've been watching HER rear-view mirror.

Summer is still here Holly.
And I am still ready to take MeMe and make a baller out of her.

Your arguments are inconsistent. On page 2 of this thread, you say DD should've been pulled, cussed out, and then put right back in instead of being pulled and benched. And now in this post you say the problem is Holly idolizes her. Pulling someone and benching them is no form of idolization.

I looked over your last 100 posts to see if you have ever said anything negative re HW, X... Its obvious you see no wrong with Coach W and defend her vehemently in every posting, While I am trying to help her look at things differently... I do not expect us to agree on anything.

Don't rain on Coach's parade.

It's a long time till the next ballgame and we need him to keep things interesting/stirring around here.

I don't even have 100 posts. And I don't think saying I'm losing hope that Holly will make us competitive with UConn can be construed as positive. But regardless of what I think of her coaching ability, I won't be unfair. I won't criticize her about things I have no knowledge of, such as what goes on in practices or meetings. But I will defend her against senseless and illogical arguments.

I sat behind the bench at multiple away games this past season. I personally heard some of the things Holly said to the players during timeouts.

It just isn't true that she doesn't get on the players, in spite of what keeps getting posted on this board. I heard her tell one player that if you do that again you're not going back in this half. Well the player did it again, and she didn't go back in in that half. I'll give you one guess as to who that player was. I heard her implore the team to take the first open jump shot. I heard her blister one player for not getting back on defense.

I don't think Holly was very effective at coaching this team this past season, but the narrative that has developed that she doesn't get on the players just isn't true from what I've seen.

I don't blame Holly bc I wouldn't have allowed you to work with Meme either. For a coach or anyone to allow something to work with a player their has to be some substance behind the person. A quick google search of your name shows four things:

1. your constant criticism of a program that you claim that you want to help. 2. Constant bragging that you are an Alpha coach 3. Low level drills with a 12-13 yr old 4.A video of you coaching a 12 year old AAU team

If you want to reach the level that you are aspiring to reach than you need to have a strong reputation. I know a lot of the AAU coaches and trainers in this area but had never heard of you besides this website. You even admitted that you had a hard time finding an AAU team to coach. To be accepted by UT, you need to put out there videos or information showing all of this stuff that you claim to do. Make a webpage showing you doing high level training and coaching High level AAU teams. Build up your reputation by training girls in this area and turning them into Alpha type of players. People will notice a huge change in players that have been trained by coach Jumper and your improved reputation might give you the opportunity to work with Lady Vol level talent.

+100000000 thank youuuuu!!! I was at the SEC tournament last year and the way Holly blasted some of the players, took me by surprise because they NEVER show her in that light on the television. I've come to the conclusion that the posters that continue with that narrative have never attended an actual Lady Vol basketball game.

Of course the other side of this is that Holly when she does get on a player she is "throwing them under the bus". Personally I think Holly was trying everything she could think of to get the team to respond and nothing much worked. Again, she wasn't very effective this past season, but it wasn't because she didn't get in a player's face - I saw her do so too many times to think that.

It always surprises us what they don't show on TV. We came home from one game and watched the replay. The announcers commented on how little Bash was doing, not playing up to expectations, etc. They were in the same arena we were....we had seen Bash getting trainer assistance, stetching out an injury etc., but never one word did an announcer say as to the obvious fact she was playing with injury/pain, nor did the camera ever pan that way and show it. Guess that just wasn't important to them. I know some posters can't get to a game, just not a possibility, but if some of them could, or if the TV announcers/cameras would give the total picture, I think some of the posts might be less harsh about the girls.

Well, I hope Andaya can serve this year in a backup role, if her knee is a big problem. I would certainly like to see her get a big sendoff at the end of the year from LV fans! Considering how she has thrown her body around diving after balls, lighting a defensive spark at times, she deserves that!

That, we can definitely agree on.

Maybe she could "medical redshirt"?

She redshirted her freshman year. I don't think she can do it again.

She may be able to as a medical redshirt. If she wnd ants to stick around a little longer she can apply and could possibly be approved she would just have to show that she would be out all year with it and not have the ability to play which is why I don't think she will be able to, if it was a torn ACL she could return for an extra year but because its just lingering knee issues she wont get the approval. Remember Morgan Tuck could've return for another year (she redshirted because of Injury one year and received a medical redshirt the next) same with Drey Mingo who went to Maryland and was granted a 6th year of eligibilty because 1 year she got like a medical illness and then the next year tore her ACL or Achillies, so it is possible but is she willing to stick around or would she rather move on with her life?

I doubt redshirting is an option. She has played giving it her all, diving into the benches and scorers' table, throwing herself after balls and other players, being cut down while going up for layups, fighting her shoulder and knee injuries and playing on. I hope she will be able to do what she can, and what is best for her. And I hope the fans have the chance to give her a proper send-off whenever it is time.

Getting 6th years is very rare, and because of the nature of the lingering injury, it is highly unlikely to be granted (as you stated). But Morgan Tuck is a different matter. She was granted an injury waiver, but she did not use it and graduated with her recruiting class. Thus she only played 3 seasons and the 10 games of her injury season. She never had a need to request a 6th year. Michala Johnson was granted a 6th year. She lost a year sitting out for transferring to Wisconsin from UConn and then missed another year at Wisconsin for an ACL. She petitioned for a 6th year and it was granted.

I would guess that Draya is going to have her Master's completed by the end of this academic year anyway. I believe her original redshirt was for the shoulder injury, and if she was able to get a second redshirt for a knee injury, how does her academic progress factor in? Would she have to enroll in a second Master's or PhD program? Maybe she's tired of school and just wants to move on.

However, this is a prime example of Holly's poor interview style. She should have just said that she was limited in her contact to 2 hours and she couldn't wait for the normal contact period to start so she could begin to work with the team. Instead, she's got people questioning her judgment.

CHW will never be a good or decent interview, people may as well get over that

i didn't see anything that was out of hand, she is basically telling MeMe to be in better shape this coming season

and it did explain a lot of what has been going on with Carter

I have noted, over the last several years, several players who have come into the season out of shape. This is very disappointing. I would think being in the best shape ever would be part of the expectation, as playing ball provides the nice athletic scholarship to a good education, with a chance to travel, eat regular meals, academic help if needed, medical help if needed, and other perks not readily available to most other students.

They are just trying to emulate the head coach.

You don't rest elite athlete's before a competitive run, you work them into a lather, so they are ready. Staying with the racehorse analogy: you work the steed all the way up to the week it is to run the race, then you give it incremental rests so it can use the training it had, and have enough gas in its tank to perform at its peak.

Forget burnout at this age...Burnout only happens to a vert tiny margin of players beyond middle school.

MS is when most of burnout happens, in my history and memory...usually for one of two reasons:
1) They have played the sport to that point because Mom or dad was living vicariously through them.
2) They find out that the better they get, the more it affects their personal life... The lose friends to jealousy; They don't get to go to events because of workouts or games; Or, they're simply not watched for the obvious signs... e.g... they start trying to roll eyes or make excuses not to go to an event., and so on.

Can anyone say Shoni Shimmel?

First, I can't imagine how any player could be too much out of shape since they have the fall to work before practice starts. Second, team fitness is NOT one of our issues.

I'm curious as into which players you think came into the season out of shape. I've not once thought fitness has been a factor with our team.
