Not so!. Please carefully read the post again. I didn't endorse Fisher, and I referred to his slim possibilities as our next coach to being exactly the same as why I feel Gruden will shy away. I just know Fisher loves Tennessee, the state. As for Gruden, I have no idea about his feelings for Tennessee and living here. Both, though, will need to square up with the realities of what it takes to recruit quality physical specimens to play college football for the schools' programs should either choose an SEC position. (Note the absence of "quality mental specimens.") Teaching at the university level for 30 plus years, along with viewing how some of the very best see it all go down the drain with law enforcement matters, has influenced my views on this. Granted, though, some of the youngsters have both qualities; however, a great many let the IQ wane in favor of working harder on development of having that look and supposed skill set we see in ancient Greek statues. What's more, the really great ones make it so obvious they are merely biding their time to finish their junior seasons just to put their names in the NFL draft.
I find this all so distressing. I just know collge football coaching has to be one of the most demanding professions out there. The need to recruit supermen guys finishing high school, I feel, is the number one source of what makes college coaching as demanding, draining, and desparation laden as it is. Were I a highly sought after coach in the pros as well as college, no amount of $$$$ from the colleges would ever get close to make me sniff around a bit at the situation. I would just use that to leverage for a higher salary at the pro level. (Isn't that how it is done?)
In the end, whoever we hire as our next football coach had better be among the best in the nation as a recruiter; otherwise, the thoughts of being at the crossroads of UT Football will fade fast in the conversation. Instead, we will be evaluating and woeing over how such a storied program got into the circumstances of zero relevance following a 1998 National Championship. It pains me to think this, but I know it is true. Let's all hang together as the Vol Nation and hope a degree of kuck finally comes our way. God knows we are so deserving.
