me too. Had a JD for about 7 yrs. Engine went out. Could have had it repaired but chose to just get a new one. Got a cub cadet with Kohler engine. Word from the guys around here that repair mowers is that the Briggs on JDs arent made like they use to and will go out sooner.

I had a Briggs several years ago and wasn't impressed at all.

I have a Honda I bought at HD that is great.

So easy. Barely have to pull it. Even the wife has fun mowing (sometimes)

Probably the same on I have

The last part should be a Honda commercial.

I run a newer John Deere zero turn and it us both tough and fast. The handles are also very attentive yet not loose like you find on many. Would recommend many times over.

And I speak from experience as worked worh a guy as a landscaper for a summer once. We did multi acre homes, and medium cemeteries most. Spent all day shooting the ****, getting hot, and drinking copious amounts of beer/liquor.

A whole summer huh? That really pads that resume.

This is exactly what was wrong with my JD. As soon as it heated up it wouldnt pull even the slightest hill.

Yep.

20 years of experience. I've seen just about everything. Hell at one time I had 125k in mowers on the ground. Something was always breaking.

Any of you mower experts know if Gravely mowers are good? Hubby is looking at Scag but the Gravely is close to 2 grand cheaper. He is also interested in Bad Boy sold at Tractor Supply but very leary because of some things he has heard about them.

He mows close to 3 acres weekly.

All 3 listed are good machines.

Not knowing which models he's looking at, it's hard to get specific.

Bad Boy mowers are good machines. Built in Arkansas. Depending on where you guys are at, he can drive to the factory and get one cheaper than what tsc is selling them for.

If you guys have a ex-mark dealer close, check with them. Best mower for the money.

We are in tri-cities area, haven't thought of ex- mark. Thanks for the input!, he's really looking forward to cutting down his mowing time with a zero turn

Once you use one, you will slap yourself that it took this long to get one. Incredibly efficient.

Good luck to you guys!

Thanks man! 4 -5 hours on a 54" riding mower is rough as you get older and sucks up valuable weekend time.

No problem.

Hustler makes a good machine as well. Just shop around.

60" should do it. 3 acres mowed in an hour. Back in the house to watch the Vols!

Imho which is not worth much but from my experiences in the golf course side of turf grass: John Deere makes great mowers but highly over priced; Toro good not great and generally over priced as well; Scag not much experience but have heard they are well made; Exmark good not great but generally decent priced; Kubota good but very high priced; Dixie Chopper good generally high priced. Stay away from Husqvarna, John Deere at Home Depot, Troybilt, Snapper and any other box store brand mowers they are not built for high usage. The decks and blade mounts will bend. In general, any kind of zero turn mower with a large deck is going to be costly probably in the range of 5-6k for a good brand.

I would stay away from used mowers unless you know who has used them especially if they have been used by a commercial mowing company. They will have very high hours and are usually beat to crap haha.

Should be able to mow 3 acres quicker than 4-5 hours with a 54 inch tractor. Must have a lot of trees and landscape he has to circumnavigate.

What is the best residential riding lawn mower under $1,500, preferably under $1,200?

Go to a Husqvarna dealer and see what they can do for you, not much in that range is worth a damn but you should be able to get 0% financing.

You also should be able to get a little Ariens for around 14, not world beaters but solid machines

Toujours I'm curious for your opinion. I just purchased a half acre of flat land In Denver NC. I need to buy a riding mower. On Craig's list a guy's got a Troy bilt pony 15.5 HP for sale for 750. I know it's a cheap mower, or a the least a lower end mower, but should I pony up and buy a higher end model for my yard or be happy with a cheap riding mower?

If it runs well and is relatively maintained, F it and buy it. Keep the oil changed and the air clean and it should take care of you just fine.

I would quiz him as to any issues though, maybe you can test it for a few hours and see if anything funky happens. With most of those motors you've got a boat anchor if anything internal is shot.

Look for smoke, any oil leaks on the motor that might've been washed off, etc, which is why I'd run it for a bit before signing off on it.

Good luck.
