Any Vols Coming out to California for the Cal Game?

We responded to his post. We do have the toughest conference.Get a clue? Nice 80s referense. When I read you post I wanted someone to gag me with a spoon

no one is doubting you have the toughest conference. That doesn't guarentee a victory on sept 1st though. Nor does it guarentee that Tenn is better than Cal in 2007.

Of corse not but if you were in Vegas and were forced to bet 1000.00 who would ya bet on?

I would bet on the average SEC team over the average pac-10 team. I would not bet on tenn against Cal. Not at home (where cal was undefeated in 04 and 06), with an expereinced qb, wr core, and oline. And not with an inexpereinced vol secondary and zero experience at the Vol WR core. And the fact that the Cal players will have payback in mind and the vol players will likely be as overconfident as their fanbase.

Btw: I fully expect Cal will be favored in this game.

Given the life this thread has taken on, you can't really expect everyone who pitches in to be all sunshine and respect. If you were to look back at last season, around here, you'd find that the Cal win increasingly became viewed as an aberration relative to our team's talent. A season opening game is probably the most difficult for which to grasp what will likely transpire. I'll take my team though. And I'll think no less of you for taking your own.

This Tennessee team, notwithstanding the area's that will need youth to shore it up, has the potential to be special in it's conference this year. A good performance against Cal is an important measuring stick for the more vital SEC play to follow.

Puffed up talk around here likely has less to do with disrespect for the Bears than it does high expectations from football mad fans...

WR wise Meches spirit will be on the field:) Cal is nowhere near as tough as places like the Swamp so its no big deal to play there. I am not over confident, I am worried.

:hi: I certainly don't expect anyone here to pick Cal to win, particurally after last season. It's the "it will be worse than last season" posts that I find so humorous and delusional.

jesus not this unspoken rule bs again? Maybe there is a reason why it's unspoken? In other words maybe no such rule exists.

one game does not prove anything gents. If we beat you that doesn't mean we are always better than tenn, just as you winning last year doesn't mean you are always better than cal or the pac-10. get a clue. you guys have received beatdowns in the past and got up and responded the next year. all this "were special and dominate everyone because we are tenn and in the SEC" stuff gets old real quick. And you wonder why the rest of the country thinks the average SEC fan is completely delusional. I'm sure you thought you would blow out penn state as well. Has there EVER been a nonconference game you thought you would lose? I bet not. Funny how you say that you only respect USC. USC respects Cal. Every trojan fan to come on the cal board predicts a Cal victory on sept 1st. Every single one. You guys need to get out and see the world a little. You might find that pretty good football is played out west.

There is no reason for debate. There is no reason to argue. What has changed since last year? Cal lost their best offensive weapon in Lynch. The same clown footed QB that looked lost at UT is still the starter. The D that allowed 35 points in 2 and a half quarters lost their two best players in Mebane and Hughes.

How can someone get on here and say "Cal will beat UT" when you look at it logically?

Not biased but UT lost their top 3 receivers. UT had one of the best WR classes in the nation as well as returning 4 guys that could start at WR. It sucks losing Meachem, but UT will not miss him as much as some people think.

Our D line was mediocre at best last year. UT lost Harrell shortly after the Cal game and was undersized at DT the rest of the season. UT had 2 of the top 15 DT's sign in the nation, one which enrolled early. Also, UT signed one of the highest rated DE's in the nation. I would say our D line just improved.

UT's DB situation is the only thing that looks like Cal might have an edge on them. BUT a starter that did not play in 06 comes back from injury, 2 JUCOs come in and the best CB prospect in the nation signed with UT.

So really, cheer for your team. But do not assume that Cal will win in a blowout. Do not assume Cal scares UT fans in any way. Do not think that DeSean Jackson will get a ball kicked his way. If your biggest weapon is a punt returner he can easily be taken out of the game by directional punting (kicking away from him) UT has one of the best punters in the SEC.

No question our fans aren't going to intimidate teams used to playing in the SEC. The game will sellout, it will be loud, but it ain't the swamp. But your team will have to travel the 2000+ miles, be playing in an unfamiliar environment, in a town that can be very distracting for 20 year old kids. It's an advantage, certainly not the advantage your team had last year, but an advantage. And Cal has been a lousy road team the last couple of years.

You're right. Tennessee having better players is what guarantees they are better than Cal.

Just curious how you became a Cal fan instead of USC or UCLA? Do you hate yourself? That's a form of self mutilation to me........

Lynch is a loss no question. Forsett is a good backup, jackson, hawkins, and jordon are all very fast good wide receivers. That was nate's first div 1-a start. Trust me he looked damn good the majority of the rest of the season. Particurally at home. I bet ainge didn't look fantastic at times his freshman season. We do lose mebane, bishop, and hughes, but beyond those guys it was a very young defense. With the rest of the defense returning, I see the team defense being better.

As for your WR and secondary. Very rare, no matter how talented, is the player that can step in and dominate his first game ever. I'm sure your guys are good, but to not expect some dropoff the first game of the season is unrealistic.

Speaking of distracting, I hope Coach Fulmer gives each of our players a shot of penicillin as they deplane, and another booster shot when they return to Knoxville. We are talking about Berkeley, right? :)

First off, Cal has dominated UCLA the past 5 years. Why aren't you a florida or LSU fan? I went to Cal. I hate SC and UCLA. End of story.

Hard to be a Florida or LSU fan growing up in the state of Tennessee. But growing up in Cal, wouldnt you want to root for a winner like USC? Wasn't that long ago Cal was having 1 and 2 game winning seasons.

well many bandwaggon fans have made that decision. you go to a school and you root for that school no? Anyway it wasn't that long ago that SC was rather mediocre. Cal's 1-10 before-mentioned football coach had a winning record against SC in his tenure.

Agreed on the DB part. But JUCO players that have came to UT have come in and been starters from day one and played well. See Jesse Mahelona and Gibril Wilson.

Also, the receivers we have in Hancock, Rogers, Briscoe and Taylor are more than capable of picking up the slack and throw in a JUCO guy (O'Neal) and a prep school guy (Vinson) and the experience level does not concern me all that much.

Ainge looked good his freshman year, it was his sophmore year he looked lost. Not saying that will be the case for Longshore. He did improve, but the USC game he did not play well. USC did not win many games on because of their D.

Forsett is a good back. Not much of a drop off from Lynch to him. But what did he do against UT last year?

"USC did not win many games on because of their D."

Are you serious? They won almost all their games because of their D.

Forsett had a mediocre game against UT, but really didn't have many carries.
