Any word on Fulkerson coming back

We will need to add at least one impact grad transfer wing. Relying on Bailey and JJJ for 30 minutes a game scares me.
I think a 4 is more important. Then JJJ can play his minutes at the 3. I know you're not his biggest fan but I'm comfortable with
Chandler 30/ Scovi 10
Scovi 20/ Bailey 10
JJJ 30/ Bailey 5/ Mashack 5

But then who is playing the 4? Really hope Walker can provide something

If you add a bit then James is 2/3, that leaves Chandler/Vescovi/Bailey/James/Mashack to share 120 minutes, 25mpg each and 20 for Mashack?

I think priority #1 is definitely an impact post...a 4 or 5 could work but ideally I would think a 6’10”+ athletic big would be best.

Just bring in the best player(s) you can and build a scheme around their strengths. I don't care if it's a wing or post.

This would take some serious evolving for Barnes, but in today's game, you could play JJJ at the 4 and Walker at the 5 if you speed up the tempo and spread the floor on offense.

Priorities...
#1. An athletic big man who can contribute immediately. Preferably a grad transfer.

#2. A second point guard whose strength is speed and ball-handling. This can be a developmental freshman or a grad transfer. Not someone you need to give you 20 minutes, next year, necessarily, but can provide a backup to Chandler and get the ball up the court without freezing up.

#3. A deadly 3-pt shooter in the wing. Again, probably a grad transfer that isn't going to expect to play 30 mpg, but can come in and knock down outside shots and keep teams from packing the paint and daring us to shoot.

We did that in spurts two years ago with Grant at the 5 and Admiral at the 4 when Kyle would go out. As you said, replace Admiral with JJJ and Grant with Walker/Nkamhoua and push the pace.

I’ll pay close attention to it. What I’ve noticed more than anything is him taking risks swiping at balls and over pursuing passing lanes causing him to get beat by the offensive player’s first step, but I’ll look more closely to see if I see what you are seeing. I will admit that likely pay more attention to his offense looking for areas of improvement because I just assume his defense is solid.

FWIW, while he has the 2nd highest defensive rating on the team, he has a rather modest defensive win shares number (tied for 5th on the team), so maybe his defense deserves closer critique.
What you’re saying is what I’ve seen. His guy gets a step because Keon is often overplaying and going for a steal, therefore he gets caught in a bad position. I think he’s terrific staying in front of his man when his mindset is to just prevent penetration.

Agree, and I didn’t notice any major blow-bys in the OM game thru the earl part of the 2nd half. After that, I began paying attention to whether we would win the game, or not, and less attention to him specifically.

Nor did I in the whole game. Maybe Card is right since it seems to be he clearly has the foot speed / quickness to stay in front of most everyone?

That is what I've noticed most often, and as I said before when we discussed this, it is a correctable mistake. A lot of freshmen are prone to this because they were able to do it in high school and most often come up with the steal so the gamble paid off. The game is faster and the players are quicker at this level, though, and he's gotten burned a couple times trying to pick someone's pocket or anticipate a pass and it's led to an olé defense.

Well, Barnes would still rather sub in Pember, so that should tell you all you need to know.

Just looking ahead a little...

Does the team next year with Kennedy Chandler running point become drastically improved over this team? Particularly with respect to pushing the ball and ball handle in general.

My question is defensively, losing Pons/Johnson/Springer is a lot defensively...I think offensively we could be really good, but I do wonder about defense.

Yes, and this would open up shots on the outside. We rarely go inside anymore which means we pass it around the perimeter unless someone can drive and kick out. Rarely do we go inside and kick out - ironically, this is what gave Keon his open look at the end of the Ole Miss game. We need more of this and Fulky kinda taking a back seat offensively has hurt us.

Pons should have gone pro last year.
Pons would have been gone last year, if not for COVID-19 occurring. He couldn’t even workout for anyone. The NBA will look but it would have to be an ideal situation. He is still raw, really can’t handle the ball very well and doesn’t rebound or pass that well. Defensively he can play, but his range and perimeter shot would have to improve a ton to be a 3-D player. I think he will more than likely have a nice career in Europe.

Barnes called out Fulk and Pons both, Pons has responded and Fulk has not...he has to be more aggressive.

Not true at all, way more guys turn it down every year than take it.
I don't dispute this but you have consider the circumstances. What will he be this time next year? 23, 24 years old. This is not like a freshman forgoing his sophmore season to play pro ball in Europe.

Are you sure bouncing around overseas making a decent living is what he wants to do?

I dont know the guy but I still dont see Fulk loving life in Slovenia or somewhere, not knowing anybody. I dont think its absurd that he would come back and be big man on campus one more year

I would bet Keon is back.
Not if the ESPN projection is true. Who would pass up lottery money?

The guard he was guarding wasn't very quick.

Have no idea. I've said I'm only speculating but there are not a lot of first year jobs that pay 6 figures and most professional level athletes keep playing till they are shown the door. Playing a 6th season would have nothing but a negative effect on his professional career and could cost him a lot of money.

Like I’ve already stated, I see him a lot like Dane Bradshaw, a guy that was beloved by people in East Tennessee and who chose to start their “professional life” rather than “play basketball professionally”. Dane had jobs lined up around the Knoxville area waiting for him making really good money, Fulkerson will have the same. You seem to be comparing him to an average Joe just getting out of UT, that’s not the case, he will likely make more money staying around Knoxville than heading over to Kazakhstan to play basketball.
