Anybody just lost interest in todays College football

Love the Big Orange and I still watch but I don’t get as wound up about it as I did 30 years ago. Maybe that just comes with getting older. It’s gotten progressively worse in the last year or so with all the 💩 that’s happened.

I feel like with NIL and all the changes i find myself just not having as much interest in it. Depressing honestly. I personally think all college sports are ruined going forward. I’ll still watch the Vols but it’s just meh at this point. There’s no team loyalty, it’s just about money now.
Yeah... It does feel like the heart and soul of college football is slowly fading away....

Honestly it's why I love European soccer so much. The fans have done a fantastic job keeping the soul of the game there to the point the entire continent rioted when they tried to form a "Super League". Unfortunately with our culture being heavily influenced by capitalism it was probably an eventuality that College Football would become a soulless business...

I honestly lost interest when we went off a cliff for over a decade. While I still enjoy and love Tennessee football. The decade of mediocrity made me realize there is a lot more to life than sports.

That is why you cheer for the helmet and not the name on the jersey. If you are gonna buy a jersey, buy one of a senior who has been around a few years.
Maybe put your own name on that Pantone 151 jersey.

You can be in it for yourself and the team as a whole - enjoy the experience while u can!

The whole reason I didn't watch the NFL is now in college athletics. But this 10x worse everyone's a free agent every year it's going to be hard to create team chemistry. I believe if they don't get this figured out. The players development and education is going to suffer.
But the difference is in the NFL, players get in the playoffs, winning the Super Bowl means everything to them. I’m not sure college players even care if they play in the CFP or not.

My level of interest and engagement has definitely changed. I care less about the individual players now - because who knows if they'll be around for more than 1 year. It was fun to follow recruiting and player development in the past, now it's not. I'll still watch the games, but they won't mean as much. I lost interest in the NFL years ago, now I've lost interest in college FB.

College basketball has always been my favorite sport, and oddly my interest in it hasn't been affected by NIL and transfers. I think because the roster and rotation is so much smaller, and it's easy to "get to know" a player after watching just 2-3 games.

For me, football is the big loser over NIL and transfer portal - until they get some form of contract terms in place for players. And even then, I don't think I'll ever have the same level of enthusiasm for it.

Long live college basketball!

Wait. Let me get this straight. We are finally good again and you want to stop watching?

I get that NIL and the transfer portal are frustrating as all get out but I've been waiting for two decades to be proud of my team again. I'm sure as heck not going to quit now that we are back baby!

How many of you keep up with the players after they leave UT and hit the NFL? Think of those who transfer out like that....

Aidoo probably regrets hot decision after Saturday's beat down

I used to keep up with VFLs in the NFL more than I do now. Not having an NFL team that I root for has really affected how much I watch. Well that and my affinity for CFB and the fact that AI can't afford to sit in front of the TV for two days for 18 weeks straight.....those leaves aint gonna blow themselves!

Now that the playoffs are staring I will def watch the NFL, but I still don't have a dog in the fight, so its not as interesting.

It's an interesting thing to monitor.

I don't care as much either, but chalked it up to just being older now. I do think they need to tread carefully before they lost the core college football fan.

So you guys were fine 30 years ago when the conferences and networks made the sport big business and coaches were making millions and could walk way without notice? NOW you're mad? Maybe you should have been paying attention, this outcome was inevitable and the universities, conferences, networks, and coaches are all to blame. People holding onto this romantized version of the "student athlete" are living in an era that died a LONG time ago. You're stuck in an era with 3 channels. And if you don't like it.....there are lower divisions of football that are begging you to care about them.

To answer the original question though, I have been losing interest compared to my younger self probably because what happens in a game doesn't seem to be as important anymore. I enjoy it for what it is, but the days of it consuming my daily life are long over.

This will all self-correct. I think people don't realize how huge a change the portal and NIL are and the fact they are constantly changing does not help.

Yes NIL and the portal is a huge change on college ports in general. But, I think the biggest thing making it hardest is the 'system' in place. For so long administrations and coaches moved one way. All power was concentrated there, especially in football. it is less true in other sports with smaller rosters. Basketball and Baseball are a bit ahead there because the power structure there is different.

In baseball the power is almost fully in the players hands.. Most of the best baseball prospects never touch college. It's been that way forever. Baseball has to hope top high school prospects even want to do college. International is not even really a thing at the collegiate level.

Basketball schools have had at least 1 year of power over these kids. Top college basketball coaches are Displayers and aggregators of talent.. they don't necessarily have to develop. Hence the Caliparis and Pearls of the world. But even they have had to deal with the divas for a long time.

In football the rosters are so large and you have to put in 3 years. You had these players trapped in your system to some extent for at least a couple years. Depth charts at singular position groups were like 10-15 players. next man up and wait your turn were reality. Also the level of physicality is at a level where it makes sense. The difference between a high school and NFL football player is miles different than a high school and NBA/MLB player. From Senior year of HS to pro the average NBA or MLB player makes a comparatively small physical change. The average football player makes more change from high school to get on the field than those other 2 guys made from high school to pro.

Right now its the wild wild west. Rules are not in place. The novelty is still there. The agents are not that savvy. Its a math problem. Think of it like this. There are more players represented in the SEC for football than for basketball for the nation. Those 'agents' are learning on the fly for football. Basketball agents are just stepping down one year and have a wealth of experience. A lot of these football players have their uncle or some dude that quit his job at the post office to come up representing them because its new. Over the next few years the pool will shrink and Darwin law will come into effect. Less players will make stupid choices. Because look closely, yes some weird choices will always be made. But basketball and Baseball players are making less splashy/stupid choices chasing the money in the portal. Because they have, more often, experienced representation.

The branch brothers had bad representation.... leaving USC for UGA (or anywhere) was dumb. They were in a big market and likely in position to do big things. UGA has no track record as a developmental destination for WR's or safeties. The guys that show out there either came in studs or were walkons.. UGA does front 7 and tight ends. Maybe some RB's and QB and Olinemen. Name a bad ass WR or Safety from UGA in the last 30 years. WR AJ Green (stud from day 1), George Pcikens (he's done well) and Ladd Mkconkey (looking good so far) and Hines Ward? Theres been a few ok guys but I mean...ehhh DB even worse Im trying to remember a name that went on to the next level and showed out. Makes 0 sense.

2-3 years from now the portal and NIL will be normal and wont be such a big deal there will be less movement. Especially as the old school coaches (the biggest problem) move on. It something I learned early in life. I can be that guy always complaining about the man holding me back or realize, me complaining about it just has me stuck in a cycle expecting a handout on that same rocking chair with all my 'friends' nodding along and me stuck in the same spot. Create a program players want to buy into, make promises you can keep and treat your players like humans and not numbers. The problem is coaches have been able to promise the moon and deliver nothing for decades. Now you have to write checks and they have to clear.

This is what everyone wanted when education, room, board, career connections wasn’t enough to better someone’s life. Fans are reaping what they sowed. Now we have unlimited portal, extra years being pitched, no loss of eligibility for JUCO kids. Coaches being told what to do by families and when players will practice.

I agree with the op. Think about Squirrel White. I am sure he was offered more nil from fsu than from us for this year, but think about the future money and contacts he just ostracized.

As much as I've loved college football since I was a kid, my overall interest fades unless UT is strongly in the mix. In the NIL/ Transfer era, my interest in All of the other games has faded. These bowl game matchups are pathetic and mean absolutely nothing.

Kinda makes you appreciate watching the service academies more these days !!! Those players are there for a much higher calling.

Go ARMY, NAVY, and AIR FORCE !

I still love the Vols but I’m not attached to any players. I’ll never buy a jersey for a player until after they graduate.

My interest has changed a bit. In truth, my team winning championships finally has curbed it a bit, but I can’t say I’m entirely satisfied with what CFB is becoming. I’m not sure what to expect going forward.

It is starting to renew my interest in the NFL. Albeit, my Falcons continue to disappoint, but that isn’t too surprising. They have so much talent and continue to shoot themselves in the foot. I wasn’t even totally against getting Cousins, but they had no idea how to use him. We barely ran play action which is what Cousins excels at. With our running game it could have been a thing of beauty, but the opportunity was squandered.

Anyway, watching the Lions and Campbell has given me some hope for my renewed NFL interest. You can’t tell me that those guys don’t care about their team and winning. It might be short lived, but watching the Lions has been a bit refreshing.
