Anyone other than Butch Jones

I don't disagree that he is a fine coach but, guys, give me a compelling argument why you consider Kevin Sumlin to be a better coach than Butch Jones. Sure, he did an excellent job of utilizing Johnny Manziel, but how many times is a new coach fortunate enough to inherit a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback? If you take last season out of the equation and simply compare Sumlin's record at Houston vs. Butch's at Central Michigan and Cincinnati, they are quite comparable. Sumlin was 35-17 overall, with a 24-8 conference record and two conference championships. Butch was 50-27 overall, with a 32-12 conference record (combined), two outright conference championships and two shared conference championships. For those of you who are knowledgeable about them, is there a significant difference in the caliber of play between Conference USA (Houston) and the Big East (Cincinnati)?

Don't mind the troll. No way that Petrino is better than Butch Jones. There are alot of really good football coaches in CFB right now. But I think with many of those coaches comes the risk of them leaving for the NFL. Saban could give it another swing, Brian Kelly's eyeing the NFL, O'Brien has certainly earned at least a look at getting a shot with a team, and a few others have prior NFL experience that didn't go so well and could be looking for the $$$ and the shot at redemption. Personally though, I see CBJ as a perfect fit to college coaching today. He's a pretty "hip" dude. One very important factor to being a college coach is the ability to "relate and communicate" with today's young men. I think Butch screams that. He seems to fit the college persona perfectly, with the hype around the program, his relations with players/recruits, and he's very, very personable, and everything is transparent and he's interactive when at speaking events and through twitter. It's only been 6 months, but he and his staff (all of whom btw share the same characteristics as Jones) have really seem to have found a home here at Tennessee, and I don't think there's anyone I'd rather have as Head Coach. Go VOLS!!

You make a great point! I agree that if it were between Sumlin and Jones, I'd still probably take Jones. I would say that the Big East is a higher caliber of play than the CUSA. It may not seem like it because of the last few years, but they had earned that AQ status. At one point, Cincinnati, Louisville, Rutgers, UCONN, and Pitt were all pretty decent programs but conference realignment and coaching changes in higher paying conferences has ruined the Big East. But in the time Jones was at UC, the Big East still had some "pretty high stakes action" on the field and in recruiting. It was like AAA baseball. Some major league prospects just a step from the bigs. Go VOLS!!

Don't mind the troll.

I listed 32 names and, clearly, I think that Swinney and Strong are better than Jones.

However, removing the two of them from the list and leaving 30 names...

I would prefer 24 of them to coach Clemson over Dabo and 21 of them to coach Louisville over Strong.

But, yea, I listed 32 guys better than Butch Jones. Clearly I must be trolling.

I don't think there's anyone I'd rather have as Head Coach. Go VOLS!!

Or, you know, maybe you're just a fool. Go VOLS!!

Having met Butch Jones on multiple occasions and at multiple stops, I may a little biased lol. As to your earlier comments, only one coach did I come out and say was not better than Jones. That was Petrino. I'm not disagreeing about those others. But I think a good majority of those coaches are at a good to great risk of leaving for the NFL and I think Jones is more of a college coach. Having said that, I stand by my statement that I wouldn't have anyone other than Jones, but like I said, I might be a little biased. Know that I am not a fool, just a fan. The line may be fine, but I don't believe i've crossed it. I may have spoken soon about you being a "troll" but based on the wording of your earlier comments, and the fact you don't seem to be a Vol fan, but on a Vol board could make one assume, and I apologize.

I should also add that I clearly missed the last two words of your comment, hidden behind the "f-word" lol. And again, I apologize! Go VOLS!!

Saban, Meyer, Petersen, Patterson, Kelly, Shaw, Muschamp, Sumlin, Spurrier, Petrino, Bielema...

I think that's it.

Oh, wait.

Fixed it for ya. I'm a little surprised you left off Bob Stoops. Not that I think he's better, but you named practically every coach with any name recognition at all.

I might take Harbaugh (take your pick which one).

I kind of sneered when CBJ said he'd assemble the best coaching staff but I've had a change of tune. Instead of hiring up and coming and soon to be HC's, CBJ has a united staff that have been with hiim a long time and there appears to be great chemistry. CBJ is clearly the leader but this coaching staff seems to emphasize TEAMWORK amongst themselves as much they demand it from their players.

I'd like to see any of the 32 coaches mentioned by one poster do what CBJ has done so far. I may have agreed with him in December but now it's June. The guy has a great record following him and he's showing his recruiting abilities.

i do believe that CBJ and his staff is the shot in the arm that UT needs, but we backed into getting him, from Harts handling of getting UT a good head coach,I don't really know or believe he was one of the front runners to become the Vols next coach, but we have landed a good one,no matter how he got here

I wouldn't take Meyer. Straight truth.

Would take Saban.

Just like in dynasty fantasy football, you'd take A.Luck over Manning or Brady due to years you'd have Luck.
I'd take Butch over Saban and Meyer, he looks like a future stud coach and we will have him kicking butt long after the other two are long gone retired!

Hoke is not better. Let's see how he does with his qb now. He's had Danard and now he gone.

I think the list I made will only be cut down as the year continues. You may be right with Hoke. Him and Butch are about equal.

there are two sides of the coin.

the other side of the coin is from what i was able to research, jones has never beaten a team that finished the season ranked.

at the schools he was at, his teams rarely even played competition that finished the season ranked.

Is B the cause of A my gator friend? How can you win games against ranked teams if you only play one a year. How many coaches from the Troll's list would you take over Butch.

He didn't lose a game by double digits last year. That's impressive.

Yeah I wasn't even going to enter this torchable subject but this is what I am starting to understand...Most of these "star" coaches are getting old...I mean...Nick Saban is getting up there and I think Butch has a lot of energy left in the tank...As I told a Bama fan the other day who was gloating about how great Bama is(he has every bragging right known to a college football fan right now) if we were judgement day honest Bama got VERY FORUNATE to get Nick Saban...end of story...Saban is the success...not necessarily the program Bama...So yeah...I can be nothing but pleased with CBJ at this point...actually thrilled...

It's always funny to me how Bama fans who now worship Saban conveniently forget that Rich Rodriguez was signed sealed and delivered until Mrs Rodriguez decided she didn't want to spend her days shopping at Walmart in Tuscaloosa.

It's just not an exact science.

and he also got taken to the woodshed by derek dooley.

i don't want to be misunderstood here. i like the guy. i think he can get it done.

but, there is an irrational euphoria people are beginning to have about the guy. people are going to need to stick with him because this season is going to be rough. i believe the people building him up to be the second coming are going to be the first to try to bury him when miracles don't happen in season 1.

I meant to say Stoops... but typed Brown instead. I'm not sure how many coaches I'd actually prefer Brown over but, to me, that'd be like saying that Coker would be a better fit to run Tennessee.

B. Kelly was there for the taking after Fulmer was fired. But we went with Kiffin. Guess Hammy never talked to B. Kelly.

There was a thread on here that we did talk to Kelly and he told his family they were moving to Tennessee. We hired kiffin the next day. Not sure if true, don't care. It was talked about tho.
