Anyone think # 5 Chris Lofton will be retired ?

Well, that is your most compelling argument. Good points. Smiths are dime-a-dozen, yes, but it's because it's necessary. You don't win SEC games without players like Smith. Players like Lofton are almost just for gravy on top (not literally that boiled down, you know what I mean). Again, in my mind, I see us being better off without Lofton than Smith if Pearl had to go Sophie's Choice on our team...

The 2008-2009 season fits your scenario and that team was not very good. 9 seed and bounced 1st round of NCAA's.

but lofton on this years team and see what happens.we wouldnt be seeing zone every game and then stokes and maymon would get one on one down low.now put t smith on this years team and tell what changes.

If Tyler Smith were on this year's team, we would have looked like his senior season, pre-dismissal.

I imagine player number retirements will be rather rare going forward with the limited time that elite players stay at school before leaving early for the NBA. Players of the caliber that have the ability and chance to have a college career deserving a jersey # retirement won't be in school four years. Do you think it possible for a two-year player will ever have their # retired? Has it happened?

If they simply use the existing requirements then it is possible. Tobias Harris could feasibly have his jersey put in the rafters based on what he might do in his future NBA career and he only spent 1 year at UT.

I actually referenced the link you posted lol. I guess you didn't.

You referenced it? Which one are you talking about?

Edit: Are you talking about the first link to the UT media guide where it specifically list Chris Lofton as a 1st team All-American (page 2 of the 14 page pdf)? Or the second links to the John Wooden awards page where it lists Chris Lofton as an All-America? Because I am confused how you could have referenced these and still don't think he meets the criteria.

I see what you're talking about now. Still, that was preseason, and I think the criteria calls for post-season. Could be wrong. Fill me in if you know.

Where are you getting the pre-season stuff from? Lofton made the Wooden ALL-American team his senior year. It is a 10 man team with no designation of 1st or 2nd team. That is a POST season award. In the pre-season the Wooden panel puts out a watch list and it is usually good early season pub to be on that list, but there is no pre-season all Wooden team. If they are still retiring jerseys in 2014 I fully expect Lofton's jersey to go up ASAP. The biggest threat to Lofton's jersey going up would be Hart putting an end to it, but if that's what happens then the others would probably have to come down too, and that would be a PR nightmare.

I'll say that in his Junior year Lofton worked to add a slashing move to his game. Had the cancer not happened, I think he would have been a much more versatile player in his 4th year (and definitely taken SEC POY again, as well as garnering 1st team AA honors)

How quickly people forget Lofton could get to the rim as well as anyone in the SEC his junior year.

Lofton never made 1st team All-American. He made 2nd twice (sophomore and junior year) and 3rd twice (freshman and senior). He has only one of the requirements in his SEC player of the year. Based on the requirements, he does not get his number in the rafters. And yes, I do think he should be up there, pending what Stokes does in his time here.

Ok, the Wooden AA team is irrelevant. It's not coach's/AP AA. Lofton didn't make either of those, so that is the missing criteria.

Another one? I'll try again with a different link. http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/tenn/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/bk-number-retirement-criteria2.pdf 1st bullet under item 5.

Why do you think only AP or coaches awards count? And check my above post.

Here's what no one is saying that clarifies the confusion:
The highest honor is to have a number or jersey retired. For this to happen,
the standards should be very high. The recommendation is that a player must
achieve two of the following awards:
• First team All America as recognized in the University of Tennessee
basketball media guide
.

So zans was right.

Has only recorded Triple Double in recorded school history. That in no way means he should have his jersey retired but thats a pretty great category to hold all to yourself.

I was speaking NCAA all time statistics - but its more of an indication of bad basketball and/or just a huge mystery as to why no one before Tyler had accomplished that here.

Fwiw...

The committee can also vote and retire any jersey they want, even if it doesn't meet the criteria.

So if they decide that because of his senior year being being effected by the cancer, and that he may have been an all American then they could vote to retire his jersey.

Now that it has been shown though, he meets te requirement of being eligible to have his jersey retired. You have to be an all American according to the media guide, and he is according to the media guide. Therefore, he Absolutely meets the criteria of being eligible to have your jersey retired. Whether or not he will, will remain to be seen, but i fully expect that #5 to be in the rafters one day.

Oh I understand. I was just making a point that Tyler Smith wasn't great at anything but probably 2nd best in about every category of team.

7. For modification of these criteria for number retirement, the suggested modification must be unanimously approved by the Committee and forwarded to the Athletics Board at its Fall meeting. Unanimous vote of the Athletics Board members must ratify said mo

My interpretation is that they can change the criteria all together, or for just one person if they chose to.

I read that to say they can modify the criteria, not for 1 player but to modify it for all players. Making exceptions for one player would be a slippery slope.
