AR-15 Builders

I don't even know half of what some guys do. I just know what's worked for me in the past and what the AR family was designed around. And if you don't go cheap, it ends up working well for you.

Too many internet commandos will screech about how "unreliable" the AR is. Well, that's because they mainly are full of it and don't take care of said rifle. Or use cheap parts. Or try running it dry. A lot of reasons the platform won't work as well, but it gets blamed on the design overall instead of what typically boils down to operator error in some form or another.

The AR loves oil. As an old instructor once told me, what the rifle doesn't want, it'll spit back out. And that's been a pretty good rule of thumb for me in the long run. Oil it, run decent ammo through it and it'll work just fine.

I remember watching an interview one time with an ex military person who moved into professional shooting. Made the statement that the more oil he has on his face and glasses at the end of the comp the better his rifle performs. So I've tended to lube it very liberally.

Haven't had any issues out of mine. Looking forward to my next one.

Did you see the answer to James Yagers oil comment on YouTube? I forgot which guys submerged an Ar and I think a glock in motor oil, ran both guns and they worked flawlessly

I feel like GV needs to publish a book on AR's.i would purchase it.

He's been a great resource for me. I appreciate him sharing his knowledge with me. I appreciate the others that have answered my questions as well.

If y'all remember, this all started for me with me wanting to purchase another upper for my AR with the carry handle. I wanted a flat top version. I ordered a 10.5" barrel and you guys were quick to point out the problems with that. Which led me to building a pistol, which has led me to apply for a sbr stamp, which led me to building a long range AR, which has led me to building a 300 BO. Which has led me to building a new upper in 300BO for my pistol/sbr, which has left me to start the processes for a suppressor.

You guys have seriously been hurting my funds in my toy account.

That's what the toy account is for! :) Sounds like you have some nice ones!

This is one of the best stories I've ever read on here. Lol

Did you pick out a silencer yet? This is one is pretty versatile.

Anyone have any experience with holosun red dots? From what I can tell they seem to be better than decent for around $200. I would like a red dot for my new rifle, but can't justify spending $500+ on an optic for a $600 rifle, especially being a once or twice a month shooter. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OTNR8PO/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

For that kind of money, I'd go with this one personally:

Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot with Push Buttons MD-ADS | Primary Arms

And maybe add the Lower 1/3 cowitness base mount for the same price.

Primary Arms Lower 1/3 Cowitness Micro Dot Riser | Primary Arms

Primary Arms is a stand up company with a good warranty and dang good customer service.

Thanks, I will check it out. The HS comes with the low mount and 1/3, and I believe they are made by PA, but could be wrong on that.

Edit:

Holosun Technologies PARALOW HS403A Red Dot Sight - HS403A - Primary Arms

They look like the same optic with a different name to me.

Very well could be the same optic with a different name as Primary Arms probably buys from the same company that makes the Holosun. However, if the PA breaks within the warranty period, they will replace it for free or, if they have upgraded the model, they replace it with the upgraded type. Free of course.

I've just come to trust Primary Arms and have heard far too many success stories about their products over the years. Your choice, but I'd honestly trust them over a brand I didn't know.

Indeed, seconded.

Thanks again for the info. I am going to dig a little deeper into the Holosun warranty, but they claim a "limited lifetime". Either way, it sounds like PA would be a good choice.

Ok guys. I was mocking up my latest build, 300BO pistol that will become a sbr when it goes thru. The barrel is very tight going into the upper receiver. I lubed it up but it is so tight it will not come out. All my other builds have never had the barrel this tight. Thoughts? Any idea as to how to remove the barrel?

Sounds like either the receiver or barrel is slightly out of spec.

ETA: Why'd you continue fitting if it wasn't going in correctly?

And try tapping it out with a wooden dowel and about an 8 ounce hammer. Large enough dowel to hit the back of the chamber, but not small enough to go into the chamber. Tap, tap, tappy. Not forcing it out. Just easy taps.

I bought two uppers and they're both tight. Must be the barrel. And idea as to how to remove it? I thought about heating it up a little. If I could get it out I would slight sand the barrel.

See above. Wooden dowel and ease it out.

Personally, I'd return the barrel and let them know the problem. The moly grease should have helped it slip right in without any trouble.

You are using moly, right?

No,I was using a synthetic lube. I buffed the barrel with a scotch Brite pad and cleaned. It seems to be OK now. Still slightly tight the last 1/8" when the guide goes in the slot. It's not an expensive barrel. It's by Radical. I read they were decent Quality.

I got it out before I read your solution. I used a long 3/8" socket extention and a rag and tapped it out.

Edit: I was using a white lithium grease. Is this not acceptable?

The lithium is okay as well. So long as it doesn't have any graphite in it. Just partial to the moly disulphide since it is about $3-5 bucks for a tube you'll never use up.

One of the rails I bought specified lithium and I boughta tube and been using it since.

Ok AR15 think-tank members. As I've stated. I am building an AR in 300BO. I'm building a complete carbine length rifle and a second upper for use on my pistol which on approval will become my SBR. I'm building the second upper because my plan is to go ahead a purchase a suppressor. I have read that the 300BO works really well with both subsonic and supersonic ammo. But I've also read where getting the gas right can still be an issue, over gassing on hotter loads and under gassing on subsonic loads. I'm thinking of making the pistol upper a piston gun utilizing an adjustable gas block. I've also heard that the piston guns run a little quieter when suppressed. What are your thoughts/experiences with add on piston setups? Is it worth the money? Have you had issues going from suppressed to non-suppressed? Subsonic to supersonic?

Here is a system that caught my eye:

.750" Adjustable Piston System - Pistol Length - Clamp On - Melonited – Superlative Arms LLC.
