As with Dooley, the third year will be very important for Martin, IMO. With Maymon back, returning McRae, Stokes, Golden, Richardson, and company, and with the addition of Hubbs, the talent is there to compete in the SEC. Anything less than a respectable run in the SECT and a decent 'AA bid would be a disappointment, and possibly grounds for dismissal.
Who could we have plausibly hired that would have been better than Martin on paper? No hostility, honest question.

Not sure who we could have got. I know that we are not an elite level team, but it pisses me off to see South Carolina go out and hire big name coach after big name coach (Holtz, Spurrier, F. Martin) while we continue to go the mid major route in all sports.

Sorry couldn't resist. Maybe I interpreted the question wrong, and if so my bad. I assumed he was asking was Martin the best hire we could've made, as in best guy we could target. I said "hell no" based on that, because clearly Martin isn't the best coch out there. However, if what the question meant was...was Martin the best hire we could've made, as in guy who we actually can hire, that's a bit more difficult.
I don't know who would've taken the job. I do know smart and Stevens were contacted and neither were interested. IIRC wright and Dixon both publicly denied interest and reaffirmed their commitment to their current schools. So...as for best guy who we could bring in, he quite possibly could've been our best option, but I don't know who else would've taken it so I can't say that with 100% confidence.
If I remember right, there weren't people jumping at the job. Like say with the football team...butch jones was basically begging for the job, and he has a very solid resume. (not trying to get into FB talk). We didn't have that with the BB program, I remember some stuff with Rick Byrd from Belmont and that he'd take it, but I'm not sure he'd be the better option.
Am I the only one tired of seeing this board whine and cry about the AD "not caring" about athletics? My god, people need to stop reading the tabloids and believing the conspiracy theories.
Look at the state of our athletic department. Look at the hires we keep making in comparison to other programs across the country. It's pretty obvious we have some serious ineptitude within our athletic department/administration.
Whether or not the hires work out is completely different from the conspiracy that they don't care, etc. They are making decisions they feel (with a lot more knowledge and insight) will be best for the program and university.

Do you REALLY believe that in your heart?? lol I personally think Dave Hart sabotaged the Gruden hiring and wants that false power. I dont think hes a UT Vol through and through.
They're not making decisions with the intent to win. I can understand the basketball hire, but the football hires have been inexcusable. Sub-par AD and I don't really see an argument against it.
