Church fervor and attendance wanes and grows from time to time. In fact, it's nothing new. I could be wrong, but if I'm not mistaken church attendance was almost as low (if not as low) during the time immediately around the American Revolution as it is today. That period, however, was immediately followed by Second Great Awakening, for whatever reasons, and church attendance grew exponentially for some time. I think there was another period of recovery during the late 1800s/early 1900s. Perhaps we're going through a similar trend at the moment with the decline of attendance, and perhaps attendance will recover again. I think the catch this time, though, will be to what effect media saturation and cultural intermixture influence, or perhaps even inhibit, this recovery. This development was not exactly in place in the previous periods of recovery.
