So were any players actually forced to wear the crosses? If so then that is wrong. I would love to see a rule/law that states the wearing of a religious item on a helmet constitutes that school is endorsing religion.

Wouldn't have a problem with it at all. It is clearly a reflection of the team's sentiments towards individuals not the religions to which they belonged.
