Article: Tennessee’s Pearl not coming to Heights

Good post. I'd agree that Pearl has done a lot for UT basketball. However, I'm not going to pretend I'm as optimistic as I was a few years ago. The end result this season was nice, but to be me there is no doubt that the last two and a half years weren't nearly as good as the first two and a half under Pearl. Has he revitalized the program? Absolutely. After the Memphis game a few years ago that led to the number 1 ranking, I would have defended Pearl as much as many other people, and I'm not really sure there are a whole lot of guys that could have done a better job. However, a few years later, there are still things that Pearl has to prove he can do to get UT where everyone here wants them to be.

I mean, I guess. You did post this today, right? Didn't get caught in the ether for two months somehow?

Looking back on it, even though people were complaining at the time, I see absolutely nothing worth complaining about after the first of the year, which is ridiculous given what happened at the first of the year. We had precisely one bad loss (and pretty much everyone loses a bad game on the road at some point during the season...hell, Kentucky lost at South Carolina) and one other game where we just flat-out failed to show after that point. For all the talk about us being inconsistent, we really weren't...like, at all. We were incredibly consistent in building to the end of the year, and by the end of the year, we were one of the 10 best teams in the country. Nothing about that run was fluky IMO.

I'm just not sure what you saw in the first three years that you think was so much better than this year. This team was actually better than every other team Pearl has had save for maybe 07-08, and frankly, it might've been better than that one, too. Certainly was at the end of the year. If you put Lofton on this team, not only is it playing tomorrow evening, it's the odds-on favorite to win the national championship.

Huh? I can appreciate the sentiment, but Pearl's record and recruiting have been about the same in the two periods you compare. In fact, the last two years are probably better in terms of recruiting and the Elite 8 trumps everything done thus far.

I think what has changed are the expectations.

God I love being a Vol! You guys realize that on many schools' message boards, with their teams' seasons over, it's so quiet you can almost hear crickets chirping through your computer's speakers? Not for us, by God we have some seriously spirited debates to follow practically every single day!

It's great to be a Vol!

As I've said before, in my opinion 99.5% of the posters on this site are immature, undereducated, and proven losers. You thinking I'm stupid, or everyone on this site thinking I'm stupid wont make me lose a bit of sleep, big boy.
You cannot win. He has several disciples that will attack anything negative toward Him.

Why would you be less optimistic after an elite 8 run, and a great recruiting class coming in? (with the potential to be stellar class with the possible addition of Selby).
The run made me more optimistic, but not as optimistic as I used to be. Here's why:
First year: Pearl came in, took a 14-17 squad, and turned it into a two seed in the NCAA tournament the year after.
Second year: He took a young team and got within a point of the Elite 8.
Third year up through the Memphis game: UT had a great record and got to number 1 in the nation. As much as we want to see postseason accomplishments, it's still pretty hard for me to deny the significance of that.

At that point, I was about as optimistic as possible. It's not that he's done a terrible job since then, but it doesn't match the job he did starting it up.

To summarize, he has certainly proved to be very capable of jump starting the program. At the time, I just assumed he'd be able to finish the job. Now, I'm a bit more skeptical.

Adding Selby would certainly make me more optimistic.

I'm not saying that Pearl did a poor job with this squad, I'm saying I'm not overly confident in taking a championship caliber team and finishing the deal. There's a difference between overachieving with pretty good talent and taking care of business when you have extremely good talent. Pearl has shown he can do the first. I'm waiting on the second. Not saying he doesn't have the ability to do it, I'm just saying we need to see it.

Exactly. I'm not trying to start an argument, but he didn't beat Michigan State without their best player. It's not like I have a lot to say that Pearl will take us to the Final Four one day. A lot more confident than I use to be, but not THAT confident.

say what u want, BP is a great coach and a excellent proponent of UT, judging by what I read here at times, probably better than we deserve. Amazing to have some people whine about him. He's got more going on in his little finger then these complainers have in their pitiful lives. face it, this dude is good and we are lucky to have him.

Coach BRUCE PEARL! has class! I don't care who makes fun of him painting his chest orange and white. He is here for UT and the athletes. Piss on Kiffin! Hopefully our football program will be as competitive as our b-ball program, thanks to Coach Pearl and his players. Prediction: We beat Coach LK and USC in the National Champ. game n 3 years by a td. Go coach DD! Lets show the SEC how football is played.

I hope you're not putting any money behind that prediction.

Interesting that Pearl brought it up.

Like I thought, if their ever was a spot Bruce could have left us for it would have been BC because of his passion for that area/school.

But, luckily for us he has alot of the stuff the former football coach didn't have, loyalty, dignity, commitment...take your pick.

To say LK didn't have Loyalty is asanine. He clearly had loyalty. (To USC)

A classy person cheats on his wife? And since when is leaving for a better job is classless? And when does 17-19 in the WAC make you a good coach?

I've been following this thread to get another perspective on the possibility of Bruce Pearl coming to BC.

I understand why he wants to stay in Knoxville but the BC job isn't lousy. In fact I'd argue that BC's basketball history makes it a more attractive job than the one Pearl took in 2005.

Best of luck to Pearl and the Vols.

In 2005 Pearl would not have been offered the BC job!

Again, I'm not sure where the "less optimistic" part comes. This past season was the second highest number of wins in school history with the furthest run in the NCAA Tournament. Last year was obviously a rebuilding year. I don't see why we wouldn't be more optimistic.

I actually don't know who's more pathetic hat or the losers who are constantly all over his balls like he holds some kind of importance. He's nothing more than a pretentious douche with a negative attitide. I can remember a time when that type of attitude was frowned upon. Now, it seems to be embraced.

To answer the question about people defending him. I don't know why people do it. I guess they think they'll look cool by siding with they guy who acts like he's an expert and insults everyone. Have you read his post game reports? He should call it "Hat's 10 blatantly obvious observations about the game." Wayne Chism will play another game in a Tennessee uniform - this is a good thing. Really? Now I see why they call you a guru with ground breaking analysis like that. Followed by 200 comments like "Awesome post hat. Do ya think we can beat Michigan State?" Its pretty sad. And did you notice the ones questioning who was defending him were the ones who were doing it? They can act like they were just calling that guy out on his stupidity, but if you notice most of them are just regurgitating the insults hat had already said. If that guy was arguing with some random poster no way every one jumps on his back like that. With that said, that guy was a moron though. I'm not at all defending him.

Glad you said it. I was thinking it but too lazy to write it, it's late.

Can't post a link from here.

Google the Looney Tunes' cartoon, "Spike the Bulldog and Chester the Terrier".

100% agree, Vol Nation please quit pandering to a poser!! Any time I see that garbage, I do not read any further!

As for BP, he knows BC is a crummy job. Just because you liked a place in the early years doesn't always mean you you'll go back, life changes. We've had THREE football coaches in 34 years and seven hoops coaches in 46 ( 5 in last 20) years and people are so stupidly paranoid!! I love UT as much as anyone, but get a life!!! I'm going fishing today!!!!
