You know exactly what I mean. No, he wasn't legally on probation. But Cincinnati read him the riot act over the drinking, and he couldn't control it which contributed to his "resignation". WVU even put a clause in his contract about it. Stop tapdancing around it, you know what happened.
And on what planet is Michigan a better job than Tennessee at this point?
Zimpher didn't read anyone any riot act. There is nothing in Huggs' West Virginia contract but the standard behavior provisions that are in all coach's contracts in Morgantown. His is no different than Bill Stewart's.You know exactly what I mean. No, he wasn't legally on probation. He was never contacted by anyone at Memphis. Why would Arizona saying thanks but no thanks be a story? The Pumps called multiple times and got the same response. Where's the story there and who has any incentive to run it?
Not so sure it works that way...Right, but if he were that adamant about the Arizona job, the media would've picked up on it and his name would've at least been on the proverbial candidate list, which it wasn't. I remember it specifically, because I remember being surprised that it wasn't, especially given how up in arms everyone was over our "horrible" 08-09 season. I kind of assumed he'd say: "Screw this!" and start looking for other jobs. I'm not saying someone should've drafted a story headlined: "Pearl Wants Arizona Job, Doesn't Get It"...but it doesn't really work like that anyway.
Why would his name end up on a candidate list if the athletic director has no intention of talking to him? When media members, be they beat writers at the Tucson paper or Andy Katz, start trying to see who is a candidate, they don't care who is trying to get in on a job. At a place like Arizona, there are a million guys trying to do that. They concern themselves with people the AD is actually looking to speak with for the position.Right, but if he were that adamant about the Arizona job, the media would've picked up on it and his name would've at least been on the proverbial candidate list, which it wasn't. Second, perhaps he wasn't contacted about the Memphis job, but if he's so adept at carpet-bombing people with interview requests, it doesn't really matter whether they contacted him or not, because under your theory, he would've contacted them. And while it's certainly possible that it could've happened, I still don't see it being very likely that Memphis would've settled on Josh Pastner if they could've had Pearl so easily. Or Scott Drew, for that matter, although I really don't have any knowledge of that situation.
One where all you have to do is control Detroit and you have Final Four talent every year. If a simpleton like Steve Fisher can do it, why can't an icon of the profession like Pearl be expected to do the same?
The city of Detroit hasn’t been considered wealthy in decades, yet it still had enough structure to have its high schools produce as many as 35 Division I players a year from the 1970s-90s, according to long-term observers.
In 2009, the city’s once-potent public school league produced just two Division I recruits. There was just one from a city Catholic school. That’s three recruits; for all the high schools in the entire city of Detroit. This year is only marginally better, perhaps five or six players.
Pearl seems like a spotlight kind of guy... I doubt his aspirations as a coach included ending up at a football school in Tennessee. I'm not sure how much better he'll ever be able to do, but I think there are certainly places he would probably rather be.Detroit isn't Detroit anymore. I'm pretty sure it was one of the articles about Forbes father than talked about the declining production of local athletes since the city essentially collapsed economically. Here, I found it.
And Pearl is a good enough coach and marketer that he would be successful at any job with the kind of financial support he needs from the AD, which is why I don't see any reason he would leave.

Pearl seems like a spotlight kind of guy... Maybe he can do very well here, and maybe he'll stay for a long time, but I doubt he'll get the spotlight he truly wants in Knoxville.
Of course he can get in the spotlight here, I'm just not sure that's what he really wants. The longer he stays the less likely it is that he'll leave, in my opinion. However, I very strongly doubt he took over a 14-17 team at a football school in Knoxville and hoped he'd stay there forever. He's got standing invitations to every ESPN show and national radio show he wants to go on. What bigger spotlight does he want? He has this city to himself, he's not outshone by any professional team and even though football is king by the tail end of football season people were already talking about Bruce Pearl's basketball team. The guy can do anything he wants from Knoxville. He's probably one of the five or six most well known coaches in the country.
I have read this entire thread as well, and first let me preface this question with this statement. I AM NOT TAKING ANYONE'S SIDE. But I have a question that I would like an honest answer to from the posters to which it applies. My question is, why do all these posters defend hatvol like he is the leader of this board or something? An honest response is appreciated from all to which this inquiry is relevant.
