Asumnu trying football; Ash getting another shot

Tennessee basketball player Stanley Asumnu is having a tryout at receiver on
the football team. Asumnu has used up his eligibility for basketball, but
would have a year of eligibility for football.

Why not? His vertical leap could do a lot for Ainge's accuracy.

Worked for Antonio Gates - went from Kent St. basketball to San Diego Chargers and one of the best Tightends in the NFL.

Same for Wesley Duke. He played b-ball here at lowly Mercer and is now playing TE for the Denver Broncos.

worked for kelly washington too. came in during the fall and in a few weeks was the default starter.

Fulmer needs put him in to try and block field goals.

It will be very interesting to see how this unfolds. He is definitely a great athlete and should be able to get open, just don't know about his hands. With the way our receivers performed last year I guess it's worth a shot. My main regret is that Coach Pearl didn't get to coach him up for 4 years. With his athleticism, enthusiasm, vertical jump, and long arms, I think he could have been special.

[/quote yes but if it is true that the last time he played football was in 8th grade...then he has a pretty slim shot but hey...if our recieving corps gets thin then we could always use the athletic gifts that you were talking about earlier

And don't forget Ricky Dudley, who became an All American tight end for Ohio State. The same team that we beat in the Citrus Bowl Manning Soph year.

Why not plus it may get some guys attention if Trooper hasn't already. Putting him on the field to block kicks wasn't a bad idea. How much does he weigh because every guy mentioned is a TE. :eek:k:

Not sure how well this will turn out, but no problem with him trying it. I agree his vertical leap and his long arms could be a helpful asset to our team.

I agree completely... heckuva athlete, but just looked out of place on a basketball court. A definite bull in a China shop situation.

Trooper said that Stan ran a 4.5 today and even jumped over the goal posts to catch one(I think he meant stuck his hands over the goal posts to catch it).

I'm not sure, but a 6'5" 215 WR that runs a 4.5 40 and has a 43 inch vertical could be good if he can catch the ball.

Now I know Stan can jump, but a 120" vertical?

Yeah, thats why I said he probably meant he caught the ball with his hands over the goalposts. How hard is that to believe? All kinds of players "dunk" the football over the goalposts.

When you ban the press, you can get ridiculous claims. I remember when Chairman Mao was swiming in the Yangzee river when was head of his Communist China, and his publicity agents released a time of his swim for that day. When the Americans calculated the time it was a world record. Mao was about 80 at the time!!

If it's true that's pretty cool. I've seen plenty of players dunk it over the goalpost, but I've never seen anybody catch it over the goalpost. Of course I've never seen anyone try it either.
