It's real simple. Cal is a paper tiger. If UT can't beat them, they have no shot against Florida, Georgia, or LSU. That means they have to sweep the rest of the schedule just to go 8-4.

I don't mean make or break, it's just that we just lost to Vandy for the first time in 20 years. We missed going to a bowl for the first time since Coach Fulmers been head coach. It's looming pretty large.

i tend to agree that it's not a make or break game...cause you still have the rest of the SEC to play, and one can certainly salvage a respectable season by beating UF, Bama, UGA, LSU etc..... :p

but, i do think that game will be very important, as i've said before, to solidify the confidence of the players and fans in the coaches and what they are trying to do...win that game, and the outlook gets much better...lose that game, and the questions will still remain...and they likely wont' get answered agains Air Force...then it's time UF...lose that and we're 1-2, and everyone is ready to jump off a building. So from that standpoint, i can see why people are putting so much on it. but even if we do start of 1-2....9-3 is still possible, 8-4 is likely, and the CPF rumblings dont' really go away...

i'm glad they are ranked as high as they are, thought i don't think they're THAT good, prolly top 15, not top 10 imo, but nonetheless...in the eyes of pollsters, top ten team coming to town...win that game, and it sends a message, even if the message is lost by mid season when Cal could have 2-3 more losses.

Bottom line, this is a game that TN should win.

as for the rest of the rankings...oh well...i don't buy OK as #1...and i don't buy UF as top 5...yet.

am i the only one having a hard time at accepting WV in the top 10??? and where in the world do they get OU as #1.....what part of their year last year warrants a preseason #1 ranking???

WVU is going to get a major push due to their big win over GA in the Sugar Bowl and the fact that they play a cupcake schedule.

to be honest i don't have a problem with WVU being ranked in the top 10...the return a lot of skill on offense that beat a heavily favored UGA team in the Sugar Bowl...they have a favorable schedule and should have 10 wins at minimum if they are anywhere near as good this season as they were at the end of last season....

I can agree with that, but you just said it was basically the biggest game on the past 15 years. :dunno:

i can go along with that. i just think it is hard to rank a Big East team that high when they don't play any other competition at all until their bowl game (assuming they win the conference and get another BCS bid)

yeah, if they go lay an egg or two early on, their drop in the polls will be fast and furious.....but as long as they win, i have no problem with that...

really, when you think about it, when FSU was always ranked in the top 5 in the 90's, it was kind of the same thing...the ACC back then wasn't all that great...but they OWNED that conference...they NEVER lost....it was what, 1996 before they lost a conf. game in the ACC ? so as long as WVU does the same....keep 'em up there.

true, i guess if you are winning in a BCS conference like that, they will have to lose before anybody can really dispute their ranking

Why is everybody so so hyped about Georgia this year???? They will do good to finish 3rd in the SEC East this year. California could beat them. I've wondered time and time again why people are so up on them this year. And so this concludedes my occasional rant....

UGA is still puzzleing me. They could be the 04 Vols, when we didn't have a proven QB, but went to the SEC championship game, much like UGA is in right now. Or the could be like the 05 Vols, ranked in the top 15 and not make a bowl

How many bad years has Mark Richt had as the head coach in Athens? What is Philip Fulmer's record against him? Playing in three of the last four SEC championsip games probably has something to do with people having a favorable impression of the Bulldogs.

Sometimes I feel some teams we play are more about the mental aspects of the game and not so much the physical,( players and coaches included), ie, UGA,SC, and maybe Bama.

Hat, i've really enjoyed reading your posts and discussions lately....but....just for giggles... :birgits_giggle:

CPF has only had 1 bad year, strictly going on w/l record, in his entire tenure at TN...CPF's record against Richt shows 1 win, terrible. And the only team other team in the East other than UGA to play in the SEC CG in the last 5 years is............TN.

couldn't resist. have a nice night.

The 8-5 in 2002 isn't a bad year?

Horrible rankings, oklahoma should barely be in the top ten let alone the top 5......usc should be way lower as well. the rest of them i dont have a problem with

Dont under estimate the Trojans. Pete Carroll did a nice job of replacing Heisman winner Carson Palmer with Heisman winner Matt Leinart. Just because they lose one doesnt mean that dont have another one waiting. I dont expect much of a drop off. The talent level there is amazing.

Yeah, we'll see how Sanchez does with those sexual assault allegations. Short of that, I don't know how good JD Booty will be. He played alright whn he got snaps in '05. I know he went 60%+ and his passer rating was somewhere in the neighborhood of 140.

Let's see how they replace Bush, White, and Winston Justice.

It is also worth mentioning that they will have a backfield that has had little or no instruction from Norm Chow. Their defense was more than shaky last year as well. You may win Pac 10 championships with that effort, but you will not win national titles.
