Look, we're basically replacing our entire front seven on defense. Our offensive line will probably be average at best. Our wide receivers have not shown the ability to consistently produce on the field in real games. Our quarterback is coming off of an atrocious season, and he is backed up by a veteran QB with no game experience and a redshirt freshman QB coming off of shoulder surgery with no college experience whatsoever other than Spring practice. When you add all of that to an absolutely BRUTAL schedule, you're not realistically looking at a 10-2 season. A 9-3 season this year would be a huge success.
i think this is pretty fair way to look at it...10-2 in my mind is not realistic this year....9-3 (which is wha i think it will be btw) is still optimistic...8-4 could be the right number, just simply based on what was stated above, and given our performance last year...

9-3 to me represents beating everyone you're supposed to beat, and beating at least 1 team you're not supposed to beat...

the schedule is not a cupcake at all...but realistically....you have to think you are going to beat Air Force, Marshall, memphis, Bama, USC, Vandy, KY, and Ark (though i still say the hogs are going to be much tougher than they appear). then you steal one vs. UF, UGA, LSU, Cal. I don't see us beating all 4 of those teams. And i could see where, if things go like i, and many others btw, think, i could see us losing to ARK....

who knows...9-3 would be great considering....8-4 would be averages, and i agree with Oklavol, the complaining won't go anywhere with 8 wins.

It really does not matter how many starters we are replacing or how young the team is. This season will be judged looking through the prism of 2005. Without a significant turnaround, and 8-4 with losses to the the four ranked teams on our schedule is not a significant turnaround, Fulmer is history at UT. He has squandered too many teams that should have been NC contenders to get a pass because he has a young team this year. At least I know what the mantra for the appologists will be if we have another bad season in '06, "Blame the youth and inexperience of our players and not the coaching staff." Well, if the coaching staff was doing its job these guys would be ready to start and win. That's what the coaches are paid to do. We had the #2 recruiting class in the nation in 2002. If this team does not contend for the SEC championship it will be a travesty.

I thought you might change your tune.

Okay, it is speculation time.

Fulmer and his band of young pups turn in a 6-6 record and lose their bowl game.

Fulmer is fired and or resigns.

Who do you hire?

We can tie it into this posts and say Stoops since his team is #1. :biggrin2:

Stoops is like the 2nd highest paid head coach in America. We'd have to pony up some serious cash to pull him away from Oklahoma. Also, he's probably smart enough to realize he won't be able to dominate the SEC like he has the Big 12 the last few years. Plus, we already had a thread about this very same subject which failed to reach any sort of feasible conclusion.

Sorry, I did not mean for Tennessee to hire Stoops. I was just referring to the post as Athlon Picks Oklahoma not Fire Phil Fulmer.

I would love to have Butch Davis at Tennessee. I mean he has already worn that awful Brownie orange.....

I still like Bill Bates but just to throw out a new idea how about Mike Heimerdinger. Tenn. connection through Titans experience. Some SEC connection from his days with the Gators. No doubt he would contribute a lot to our offense.

I'd take Al Borges. He really turned Auburn around. They had great defenses for years, but couldn't win games until Borges came in and fixed the offense. The result was an undefeated season and then another great season, despite having an entirely new backfield. If Borges leaves, I think it won't be long before Tubberville can expect some more conspiring to hire Bobby Petrino.

The good thing about Borges would be that he would be able to fit in Fulmer's orange shirts and jackets.

How much more does Stoops make then Fulmer? Not much more I think, they are both members of the 2 million club. Fulmer is the least productive coach in that club this decade.

Hey, you can come up to Buckeye country and hire away Jim Tressel. I am sure he would come for around 3 million per.

Then we can have underachieving offense and solid defense................nevermind...........

All I'm saying is: a guy in the 2 million dollar club is not easily going to be enticed from his job. There's virtually no chance of him losing his job anytime soon. I don't see why he'd want to give up the security and paycheck at OU to come to UT or anywhere else for that matter.

I'm not sure exactly how much Stoops makes, but I recall that in the national championship against LSU, the commentators said he was the highest paid coach in America. One of the stipulations in Saban's contract was that he would become the highest paid coach should he win a national championship. Apparently, after that game, Saban's new contract was for $1.00 a year more than Stoops'. Some of that might have been partial BS by the announcers.

No, I agree with you. Stoops already turned down more money to coach at FL where he was one time defensive coordinator. UT has no chance to lure him to Knoxville by simply offering more money.

Ah, memories...let's take a stroll down memory lane and take a look back at the "#2 class in the nation" in 2002.

Jason Allen ATH 6-2 200 4.32 - Muscle Shoals, AL --- 4 star, one of the greatest dbs in school history

James Banks QB 6-3 195 4.5 - Indianapolis, IN --- 5 star, one of the biggest disappointments in school history

Heath Benedict OL 6-6 285 4.82 - Highstown, NJ --- 4 star, all-american who now plays at Newberry College

Mondre Dickerson DE 6-4 268 4.57 - Coffeyville, KS -- 5 star rating...did he even have 5 tackles at UT

Cody Douglas OL 6-4 310 4.9 - La Marque, TX -- 4 star player...Cody turned out to be a good one

Omar Gaither LB 6-2 210 4.5 - Charlotte, NC -- 4 star, Omar was great too...now a Phil. Eagle

Jason Hall DE 6-4 245 4.7 - Chattanooga, TN -- 2 Stars!! definitely underrated out of high school.

Chris Hannon ATH 6-4 190 4.38 - Sarasota, FL -- 4 stars...overrated out of high school.

Parys Haralson DE 6-2 235 4.66 - Canton, MS -- 4 stars...he lived up to his rating, great career at UT

Justin Harrell DT 6-5 300 4.8 - Martin, TN -- 4 stars...thank God he's back this year, we'll need him.

LaRon Harris DT 6-3 305 4.92 - Memphis, TN -- 4 stars...did this guy ever step foot on the field?

Brandon Jeffries OL 6-5 265 4.85 - Shelby, NC -- 5 stars...another 5 star bust

Greg Jones DT 6-6 265 4.8 - Jonesboro, AR -- 4 stars...injury plagued bust

Aaron Kirkland TE 6-5 240 4.8 - Fayetteville, NC -- 4 stars...any production from him?

David Ligon DE 6-5 275 4.7 - Memphis, TN -- 4 star....no comment

Jonathan Mapu DE 6-3 265 4.8 - Kahuku, HI -- 5 stars...jury's still out, we'll know more this fall

Ruben Mayes RB 6-2 240 4.5 - Memphis, TN -- 4 stars...miserable

Marvin Mitchell LB 6-3 230 4.6 - Norfolk, VA -- 3 stars...all we have to show for him is a late night arrest

Leon Pinky TE 6-3 255 4.7 - Santa Clarita, CA -- 2 stars...who?

Gerald Riggs Jr. RB 6-0 220 4.49 - Chattanooga, TN -- 5 stars...I'd call him an underachiever

Rob Smith OL 6-4 290 4.72 - Fort Thomas , KY -- 4 star all-american, who left school early to go undrafted

Antwan Stewart ATH 6-0 180 4.4 - Dumfries, VA -- 3 star...serviceable db

Jonathan Wade ATH 5-11 180 4.3 - Shreveport, LA -- 4 stars...maybe this is his breakout year.

James Wilhoit K 6-1 180 - - Hendersonville, TN --4 stars, the kick against florida in 04 was worth the scholarship

Gibril Wilson DB 6-1 190 4.4 - San Francisco, CA -- 4 stars, excellent safety, but only 2 years here

All in all, this was a good class...but definitely not # 2 in the country. And of this group, only Harrell, Jeffries, Ligon, Mapu, Mitchell, Stewart, Wade and Wilhoit remain. It can't be considered a "travesty" if this group of seniors doesn't contend for an SEC championship...It would more likely be considered a miracle if they did.
