Atlanta Braves II

We had some people over tonight. I watched none of it. Judging from the box score I didn't miss much.

I think we can now safely say that this team's rotation -- and ergo its playoff outlook -- is in serious trouble. You have Tim Hudson, you have a couple of rookies, and you have a grab bag of guys who have sucked and/or been hurt for the whole second half of the season. It's sort of amazing how badly the wheels have come off this rotation.

Not to mention the amazing idiocy of apparently making Matt Diaz a full-time platoon player against LHP. Sitting Heyward in favor of Constanza was a way better option. (Assuming you're not stupid enough to bat Constanza second, of course, which Fredi isn't.) And let's not even get into batting Diaz third on Sunday.

I am being paid back in spades for all the snarky comments I made about Bobby's tactical peccadilloes over the last 20 years. The Braves are now being managed by a guy who's dumber than Demetrius Morley.

About a month, month in a half ago, I absolutely loved our chances of getting to the WS. I thought we were a better all around team till the Phils got Hunter Pence. Now, we are in trouble.

We'll make the playoffs, but it looks one and done.

The injuries have hurt the most. Hanson, Jurrjens, and Hudson were going to be a hell of a trio in the playoffs. Now, it's looking like Hudson, Beachy, and Lowe. And Lowe is getting the ball basically by default.

The lineup is above average. The downslides Martin Prado and Jason Heyward have really, really hurt the team. Prado has done nothing since coming off his DL stint (except a game winner or two) and Jason...well, it's just not his year. Plus, he's now in a platoon (which I hate).

I don't want to get into the Fredi debate. I'll get a couple day ban for using words that I shouldn't use. Next year, we'll be in a better position. Jason will be healthy, will have an even better rotation, Uggla will be useful for the first three months, and we will (hopefully) improve the SS position.

Bottom Line: Unless JJ and Tommy get healthy (a big if) and find their first half form (and even bigger if), it's just not going to be enough to make it to the WS. Which is a damn shame.

Add Cristian Martinez in a big game in the 7th over...well, everybody else as a stupid decision.

A lot of times I disagreed strongly with Cox's moves, but at least you could tell that he always had a consistent plan and reasons for what he did. Gonzalez manages baseball like a 11-year-old playing a video game while listening to heavy metal.

It made no sense. You got EOF or Venters. You can use Teheran. Maybe Vizzy. And you go with the long reliever? What the hell?

It would be a lot easier if Prado just did a u-turn when it was his turn to hit and conceded an out. He's just awful right now and is going to force Fredi to stuff down at 7th in the order.

May have been but it was the correct call.
Yes, it was the correct call and I'm all for getting it right. But you never see umpires do that. A guy 40 feet from the play just asked for help from guys that were anywhere from 150-300' from the play.

I agree you never see that happen, and hardly ever see them ask for help on a play like that. I was shocked that they did it, but I'm glad they did get the correct call. The only thing I could think of (which really doesn't make much sense) was that one of the other umps had a better view, even though they were farther away. Who knows really.

That's what makes it so preposterous. Nobody had a look that was remotely as good as Bucknor's. Not to mention the fact that they showed a replay inside the stadium and the crowd went nuts and possibly influenced the call.

All I ask for is consistency in how they handle it. All my life I've watched umpires refuse to ask for help, refuse to overturn obviously bad calls, refuse to do anything other than circle the wagons and act like jackasses about it. So what are they doing overturning a call like that now?

Call me an alarmist, but if the Braves aren't careful they're going to find themselves in a race by the last week of the season. The offense is just awful. McCann and Prado are automatic outs right now.

That's a very real possibility.

I expect Fredi to start platooning McCann and Ross next week.

My first FYP.

No telling who we see in the lineups for the doubleheader today. It's survival mode right now.

LOL.

Although, it was good to see Jason take two walks last night. I almost cried for joy. Maybe he stopped listening to Parrish and is sticking with what worked last year.
