Atlanta Braves II

In 1988, a corner outfielder for Atlanta finished fourth in the ROY and looked like a potential superstar. The next year he was injured, really struggled, and didn't look anything like the same player from the year before. The next year he put a 30/30 season, with a .303/.357/.539 line.

His name is Ron Gant. Who would have been a Braves HOF had ne stayed off the damn motorcycle.

The lesson. Be patient with young players.
I really don't remember it that way. I think Gant was slated to play 3b but was a disaster in the field and at the plate and they sent him to A ball to learn to play in the OF.

Larry Parrish gone. They should get Chad Mottola from the Las Vegas 51s. I know hitting coaches aren't that important, but he has gotten great reports from players and the Jays' front office.

Something clearly happened somewhere. The word yesterday that there would be no changes seemed pretty definitive.

A couple of interesting Tweets:

ajcbraves David O'Brien
#Braves GM Wren made decision to fire Parrish after meeting w/ him Thur. afternoon and not being satisfied w/ Parrish's answers, etc

mlbbowman Mark Bowman
Wren said he does not currently see Lowe in the rotation next year

Parrish was a Wren hire, if I recall the article correctly, not a Gonzalez selection. "Hand picked by Wren" was the phrase, I believe.

You think?

I don't know.

I don't mean that he's in danger of getting fired or anything. I mean that yesterday he apparently felt confident that he was in charge of making personnel decisions and that he could just speak for the organization, and today he found out he isn't. Wren is running the show.

I would guess that Gonzalez has to make the playoffs next year or he's out. Not as quick a hook as I'd like, but I'm okay with it.

One more tidbit to make you look at the sky and ask "Why now?"

We got great news on Jurrjens last night. He threw five innings and was the old Jurrjens. He was up to 91 (mph) and looked like Jair. He was pretty dominant and felt good coming out. So of all the bad things the last few days, that was really a positive. He would have been in line to start on of the playoff game based on what we saw last night.

It doesn't matter who hired him. It matters who fired his ass and how.

I hear ya. Wren is running the show, and now Gonzalez knows that for sure. Wonder if he was suprised his hitting coached got the axe?

Maybe that was his wake up call.

Just pointing out that Gonzalez didn't necessarily pick Parrish, so it's not a certainty that he's upset about Parrish getting the axe. I think people are reading too much into the Gonzalez/Wren dynamic.

On Thiursday, Fredi said this about Parrish:

When he originally announced Parrish would be retained, Gonzalez said: “I think if you hire people, let them do their job. … It’s easy to fire somebody and throw somebody to the wolves. That’s not the way I work.”

The next day Parrish was out. I don't think it's a reach to assume that this is a straight-up case of Gonzalez being overruled.

It is. Wren probably said "We are firing Parrish." Fredi probably said "We don't need to, I don't think we should" and Wren then said "If you don't like it, then you can leave. My call."

It needed to happen. You just need to fire somebody to keep the fanbase from going bananas. Fire the least productive member of your staff.
