Atlanta Braves II

Freeman was taken late in the second round, right?

And Heyward is a local kid. The Braves have been suckers for drafting and marketing the local guys for years now. It's the reason I think McCann's contract will be extended, regardless of how much sense it makes. Much of the local advertising in recent years has emphasized the homegrown Georgia guys on the team.

No money is going into this team until they sell.

Other teams also didn't get to see much of Heyward since he was walked all the time. Braves had scouts at many of games and got a better look then most teams. But they love them Georgia boys though.

Don't forget about Francoeur

Heyward:
Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 1st round (14th pick) of the 2007 amateur draft.

FF:
Drafted by the Braves in the second round (78th overall) of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.

So the 14th pick in the 2nd round..thanks

The guys on ESPN stated that the Braves could have taken Mike Stanton in the same draft as JH and FF but passed on him. Could you imagine if they had gotten all three?

@Buster_ESPN: 122.4 mph was the speed off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton's HR Monday. It's the fastest tracked in the history of ESPN Home Run Tracker.

yeah I would have taken him

I hate to be so mean to him only because you are a great guy, and don't want you agitated with me. My apologies if I offended you.

Hell no, dude. When you are sucking, you are sucking...and there is certainly no way around that fact right now. You didn't offend me at all my friend.

I really think Todd Redmond deserves a chance to show what he has got. He has done nothing but pitch his a** off the last couple years. Even if it is just a spot start or two.

I know he has been **** this year, but aside from one inning last night, Minor was relatively solid. The first Stubbs home run was just a really impressive display of hitting, and then he grooved three pitches up in the zone.

That said, he should probably spend some time working out the kinks in the minors

Minor's settled into a predictable pattern: he breezes the first time through the order; he gets into trouble the second time; he does not handle the ensuing adversity well and compounds it by making a few more bad pitches. He comes out of the game and the announcers talk about what a shame it because he was pitching so well. Rinse and repeat. At this point it's starting to look like his destiny is out in the bullpen.

Minor runs into the most trouble when he has to go to the stretch, regardless of which time through the order. Probably a mechanical flaw. The home runs are another issue, but he wouldn't be the first big leaguer with a penchant for giving up the long ball.

Batters in their 1st PA against Minor: .205/.280/.397
Batters in their 2nd PA against Minor: .310/.363/.535
Batters in their 3rd PA against Minor: .382/.426/.691

Minor's ERAs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings are 11.00, 10.80. and 9.00.

I don't doubt that he's got a mechanical flaw in his motion from the stretch that badly exacerbates the problem, because once he gets in trouble he never seems to be able to get out of it. But he sure always seems to get into trouble to begin with at about the same point in the game.

Those are some damning numbers for a starter. Thanks for digging those up and sharing, Verc.

He has huge splits between runners on base and bases empty too, so I think the "problems pitching from the stretch" effect is real. But given the giant spread in OBP against him in innings 1-3 (.294) and innings 4-6 (.421), I think it's bigger than that.

None of these trends were this glaring and obvious if you go back and look at last year's stats, btw. He got a little worse in innings 4-6, but so does almost every starter. Nothing like what you see now.

For real. Those stat lines are very telling. And as Verc said, he would probably be a good pitcher coming out of the pen.

I don't know if the one-inning-at-a-time philosophy of Modern Bullpen Management would allow it, but given how much trouble starters having going deep into games these days, it seems like having a guy in the bullpen to whom you could hand the ball in the 6th (or even 5th) inning and who could consistently deliver you to the 8th/9th with a lead would be hugely valuable. I don't know that they'd use him that way though.

Maybe Minor just isn't good

And Verc, I'm not concerned with a relief pitcher's WHIP over the course of one month. Don't sleep on Rex

This could be a mental block as well because the numbers prove that he can get batters out in certain, consistent scenarios. I've noticed that he does a lot of shaking-off of pitch selection. Of course, not a pitching coach here but if it's not a mechanical issue it very well may just be a mental issue and/or preparedness.
