Miserable

I guess putting up a 5 WAR as a 20 year old rookie is average.

Meh. That's a BS measuring tool, and that was a long time ago chief. Pitchers have adjusted, he hasn't. I like Heyward but he is just average the past year and a half at best. He could get better and I think he will but I don't think anyone is going to be polishing his bust anytime in the next 25 years

He spent 50 games in the minors higher than A ball. In retrospect it seems obvious that, as usual, the Braves rushed him. Adjusting to pitchers who are smart/good enough to adjust themselves is part of what hitters normally learn in the high minors, and now Heyward's trying to learn it against major leaguers.

Don't look now but the same thing might be happening to Freeman too. This big slump of his started way before the eye problem the other night.

Actually 3. The 3 hitter can't see, the 5 hitter is sick and the 6 hitter had his leg almost knocked off last weekend. (and the 7 hitter seems to have his head up his ass.)

Yep, and you never count on getting swept in a series, much less a 4 gamer, but when one team is throwing rocks and you are missing 3 of your best guys, you are pretty well boned

BS measuring tool? yeah, ok

Yeah, but that Reds pitching still deserves a ton of credit; especially the pen. Reminds me of the Nasty Boys years ago.

Was that .393 OBP his rookie year a BS measuring tool?

Sorry. I'm not going to give up on a 22 year old who put up on of the better rookie seasons in the last twenty years.

Didn't realize it was this bad, but just saw a tweet saying the Braves have played 29 road games in their first 46 games. That's crazy.

Wins Above Replacement, commonly known as WAR, is a non-standardized sabermetric baseball statistic that is used to show how many more wins a player would give a team as opposed to a "replacement level", or minor league/bench player at that position.

It is flawed and skewed depending on who you actually bring in as a replacement. Too many variables come into account. Of course someone who has skills to be an everday OF is going to win you more games than the replacement players "in the minors/bench players" those guys are in the minors or riding the bench because there are better options and they do not have the skills to compete as an everyday player

In 2002 Eric Hinske hit .279, 24 HRs, .365 OBP 84 RBI's, 38 doubles and scored 99 runs while winning the ROY.

Now he is a bench player.

I never said OBP was "a BS measuring tool" that one is legit.

Also, I never said I was giving up on Heyward. I said I do not think he will ever be able to live up to all the hype and expectations.. albeit I did say it in a roundabout way. People were enshrining him in Cooperstown one week into his pro debut.

For the record I think he will develop into a solid pro, but I am afraid he isn't going to be the cornerstone RF for the next 15 years. which is a bummer because I am a big J Hey fan.. I was a big Frenchy fan too. Like Verc said perhaps he was rushed to the show too soon, the pitchers made adjustments and he is still pull happy and rolling over on pitches.

I am surprised this team did not start to scuffle a little earlier considering they have been on the road the entire season including a couple west coast trips.

They have played 17 home games versus 28 road games to date.

One of my key concerns going into the last night's game.

Still totally confused as to why so much rest is needed by all of these professional ball players. I expect all of them to play every single game after late July.

It's not like these days off have exactly been scheduled for the sake of rest.

Ok, ah, so everyone is slightly injured enough to not play but not injured enough to even go on the 7-day DL. Gotcha.

They put a team on the field last night without Chipper, Freeman, and McCann. A game where they were facing a four-game sweep. Furthermore, they were heading home after the game. Not like they were preparing for a nine-game road trip. If Chipper can't play, then put him on the DL and open up a roster spot. Bring up Simmons and let him take a few swings against ML pitching, I don't care.

Problem is, there is no 7 day DL, only a 15 day and 60 day, so no way the DL is an option. just a crappy set of circumstances came together forcing them to play last night with basically a 22 man roster. If any of those 3 guys could have played last night, they would have.

Is the 7-day DL only for concussions?

McCann and Freeman-- yes. Chipper-- maybe

At least they can retroactively put Chipper on the 15-day then if his leg doesn't improve. I guess that is what they are doing with him. I know Freddie is still suffering from a hang-over, but what's wrong with Mac?

I heard that when Chipper took the grounder to the leg in TB that Mac face-palmed so hard it gave him a concussion. He's now a proper candidate for the 7-day DL.
