Look, all the sportswriters covering UT think Vol fans are crazy and unfair for wanting to fire Martin. Just like they said we were all crazy and unfair for wanting Dooley gone. I swear, the Stockholm syndrome these small-time writers get for the players and coaches they cover is incredible.
I don't think that's was the case at all. I think all the UT sportswriters understood it was time. I know all the Chattanooga writers knew that it was the end. I think even Rucker tweeted that the writing was on the wall after the Missouri game.
BTW, all the national pundits have defended Cuonzo. It's not that I agree with them.
It semi perplexes me.

It semi perplexes me why the fans want his head on a stake and act like he's some godawful coach.
At that point it was a fait accompli. I'm pretty sure he spent the whole season before that ridiculing people who wanted him gone, talking about how fans didn't understand how bad the roster was, etc.
The national writers are always holier-than-thou about how horrible and unfair fans are. But I'm not sure how anybody who has watched this Tennessee basketball team for the last three years would think that Martin hasn't had sufficient time to demonstrate what he can do. This was as good a roster as it's ever been possible to get at Tennessee and he still couldn't do much with it.
I think the mood of the fanbase would be VERY different with regards to Cuonzo if not for the fact that Pearl's show-cause was set to expire later this year. Granted, the mood might just be one of complete indifference, but I don't think you'd have people so adamant that he has to go now. On the other hand, pending the result Wednesday night, he may have just blown three years of having McRae and Stokes (plus Maymon for two) and never actually gotten into the tourney. That's just not good enough.
Oh, BTW, 14 days till Opening Day
I think what helps Cuonzo is that he's improved his win total every year. Yes he underachieved this year, but he overachieved his first year, and his win total was about expected considering the injuries he had to deal with his second year. He's averaged twenty wins a year in three years at Tennessee. That's not suckage. Do I think he's an average coach? Yes and that's not good enough at Tennessee. Do I see him getting Tennessee as a consistent Top 25 program? No I don't. Which is why I don't believe he should be the head coach any longer.
However, not in this thread, but the fanbase has completely overreacted to him and I think that's part of the sportswriters issue with the fans. This isn't a Dooley situation, where the program was being destroyed and it was easy to see. Cuonzo has a good recruiting class coming in, has the program on solid ground, the fans are still coming out, and again has improved every year. Yet the fans act as if he's Wade Houston. I think it's part of the backlash that the program is under.
