This team has two of the best 6-8 players in the conference in it, both of whom might be on NBA rosters next year. When has that been the case since Bernard King left town?

That would be Pearl's first (Watson/Lofton), third (Lofton/Ty Smith) and sixth year (Hopson/Harris). I can probably argue for the second year too with Lofton/JaJaun.

And what about the whole roster? How many of Pearl's team would have Derek Reese as the third guy off the bench?

Now, we can blame Cuonzo for his recruiting, but acting as if this team is loaded with talent is silly. Top 25 talent? Yes. But it doesn't match the overall talent of most of Pearl's team.

Do you really think that's a significant part of it? I'd never actually made that connection, but knowing our fanbase, I probably should have.

I believe it's more following Pearl, especially since Cuonzo is the exact opposite of Pearl in every single way, but it's a small part.

Did any of these guys ever make an NBA roster?

I just shake my head at the hyperbole, the either/or of it all. CCM has managed to find the absolute mid-point of good results to bad results based on his record (expectations notwithstanding), why do fans have to be on one side of the fence toward him when he sits squarely on it?

Nate Silver's company (fivethirtyeight.com) has a projection system for the tournament. Here is Tennessee's chances at the rounds:

Beat Iowa: 68%
Advance to the 2nd round: 36%
Advance to the Sweet Sixteen: 12%
Advance to the Elite Eight: 6%
Advance to the Final Four: 2%

Wasn't Nate Silver a villain in one of the Karate Kid movies?

The only two players that Pearl had who even sniffed the NBA were CJ Watson and Tobias Harris. McRae and Stokes are (or at least should have been) a far more potent combination than any duo Pearl ever had, with the possible exception of the post-high combo of Harris and Hopson. And Stokes is much better than Harris was then, while Hopson's productive UT career was really only about 12 games long.

As far as the whole roster goes, it's hard to say -- but the fact that a guy like Armani Moore is completely marginal leads me to think that the available resources aren't exactly being maximized.

I do have the general consensus of the movie and know about the first one.

I just have never sat down and watched them from beginning to end.

The starters are better this year. I love Chism, but Stokes would bludgeon him. The bench back then was obviously better -- except again, for the what the hell is going on with Armani Moore question. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like he should be the best player on either bench.

Again, though, my point was not that this is the most talented roster in Tennessee history -- it's that this is about as good as it ever gets. At the very least it's comparable. It's way too talented to be sitting there at 6:30 on Sunday sweating out whether they were going to play in Dayton or fall all the way out.
