Hale is 25 years old and has been a starter his entire professional career. Two fifths of the rotation just died. If they just now gave up on him, then they picked a hell of a time to do it.

AV is correct.

And on top of that.. How in the hell can you be in favor of paying Paul Maholm sorry ass seven million dollars to suck instead of letting actual pitchers who are a BIG part of your future pitch and in the next breath want hale and schlosser (who have no future in the rotation) to be thrown into the rotation over a veteran who's actually looked pretty good this spring and is making the league minimum.

There was never anything to give up on. Gotta have five starters at every minor league level to play the games. At every level, there's 3-4 guys who actually matter. The other 20+ are just there so those few can play.

Hale got some run last season due to lack of better options. Maybe he's got a small amount of upside, but he's been terrible this spring. Sims and Graham are the next two guys as far as arms that the Braves feel they can build around, but they aren't ready yet.

Harang > Garcia > Hale

IMO

Maholm was acquired to stop the bleeding in a pennant race when almost the whole rotation had gone belly up. He had a history of dependably, boringly going six or seven innings at a time and giving up runs at a league-average rate. That was valuable at the time. It only cost a pitching prospect that I assumed Frank Wren knew enough about to give up on. I don't form strong opinions on players whom I haven't seen because I have to assume that the scouts and coaches who watch them every day know what they're doing.

This spring is completely different. The Braves are suddenly in scramble mode as far as the rotation is concerned. They have two guys under contract for 2015 and beyond who have ever done anything at the major league level. They have Alex Wood. They have Graham, who hasn't pitched over AA. They have Sims and somebody else way down in A. It's pretty thin for 2015. And they've got five or six starts this April they need to give to somebody who is not otherwise in this year's plan. Hale obviously isn't a great prospect but he's been a competent minor leaguer; I'd rather give him that month's worth of starts to see how he does than give them to somebody who's likely to be gone in a few weeks. Maybe he could useful as a 5th or spot starter next year until the guys in the low minors are ready. I don't know. I know that I have seen worse pitchers than him man down a spot reasonably well for awhile.

I realize that you already know everything about all these prospects, even the ones at the bottom of the organization whom you've never seen pitch, and you know exactly which ones are going to pan out, and so maybe you're not worried about the Braves filling out a rotation next year. Unfortunately I don't know the future so I am.

Fair enough, fret away.

Lol at taco bell finding a bunch of Ronald McDonalds to eat their breakfast food on camera and talk about how tasty it is.

Gentlemen, we need to get 1,000 more posts so we can start the Eddie Perez thread on Opening Day.
