you clearly know more tennis than I, so help me with the changes in Roddick's game.

His coach, JC, played a very flat, little margin for error kind of ball and Roddick used to hit a very flat rocket forehand that was the best weapon in tennis. Now he hits that 6' high looper and doesn't dominate with his forehand in the least. I get that it's higher percentage tennis, but with no weapons but a great 1st serve, he's been neutered. I just don't get it.

Why would he go away from that awesome flat inside outer that he had? He never, ever hits any forehand with any hop any more.

my only answer would be the emphasis he's placed on other points of his game. He's gone from having one of the weakest return serves in the game to what I would consider well above average. He also is starting to play the corners and work his opponent. Tonight that failed him miserably because Kohlschreiber was so long. He was getting to everything. I've also noticed Roddick is trying to play the net more than he used to, but Kohlschreiber wouldn't let him.

he won the '03 US Open. Was expected to become the next great American, but it never materialized. He became too predictable with his powerserve and amazing forehand. It's now, with the help of Connors, that many are hoping Roddick is starting to turn the corner and develop into a better all around player. I was really hoping the Aussie would be his chance to shine.

he has to go back to that rocket forehand some. right now, he doesn't threaten anyone once a rally is started. His return game has picked up, but his ground game has become a weaker Nalbandian. Used to love watching him run around that big hammer.

I have to say he has improved with Conners, like you, I would like to see him win some Grand Slams. I hope he does better at the French.
I would like to see this German kid play Nadel.

he just needs to get power in all parts of his game. his backhand has never been anything threatening and i agree he needs to get his strong forehand back.

the Kohlschreiber kid never flinched. He had Roddick on the ropes the entire last set and just couldn't finish him off. Roddick never had control. That's what separates the great players from the average ones. Roddick should never get himself in that much trouble so early in Grand Slam event.

My gut tells me that Roddick will never see another slam title. He has worked hard on his game, but it still isn't there. I think the only way he wins another major is if he improves his net game significantly.

you would be correct. He finished 3rd in 2000 (or right around there) in his early years but hasn't sniffed anything close to a good showing at Roland Garros since.

from what i've seen that is what he's focusing on now. I agree with BPV, he needs to remain a baseliner and just use power. He's gotten a lot better as a defensive player, now just start attacking from the baseline. No need to volley.

Oh, I don't think he should try to become an Edberg, by any means. He is gonna have to do something to mix things up, in order to try and keep ahead of the competition. Sometimes adding net play to your arsenal, if done effectively, can help.

absolutely. I trust Jimmy Connors judgment over my own and like i said before, it appears that he is working on his net game now. It just sucks that focusing on these other points of the game is taking away his biggest weapon.

His serve is blazin.

I really thought those serves that tied the fifth set at 5 would cause Kohlschreiber to finally break down. It just never happened. Roddick still has the best first serve in all of tennis.

I didn't like it when Roddick got all angry, and was telling the umpire that he stopped going to school after the second grade or something. He's got to learn to maintain his composure in those situations, then again that's probably easier said then done. I was a big Johnny Mac fan.

Agreed. Who's on tap today? I haven't looked at the schedule.

Federer, Venus and Blake also see action today, I just don't know the times.

I don't expect much out of Blake, but I gotta have hope for an American don't I?

me too Bill, I think America's chance went out the window with Roddick in the mens. I think Serena will win another Aussie Open.

Blake may have his hands full with Sebastian Grosjean next. Probably Fernando Gonzalez with the blazing forehand after that. Tough draw.

Do you and your wife play tennis Memphis Blues?

I can play, but don't. My wife doesn't play, but is a huge tennis fan. We met at UT and used to argue regularly about who was hot and who was not in tennis. Almost 20 years later, we almost see eye to eye on tennis. :)
How about you, Volsgal?
