Chip Kelly could win in the SEC. People underestimate the prowess of his defense. I'm not saying he'd win the SEC routinely, as the competitive bar is set much higher, but I think he could occasionally win it, and if he were here, 8-4 would be a "poor season" again, rather than a "good season".

That said, Chip Kelly is an even longer shot than Jon Gruden. Nike University can throw as much money at him as they like, and it really makes no sense for him to leave an ideal situation at Oregon (competing for national titles, deep pockets) to rebuild at Tennessee.

I would take pete caroll over john gruden any day. though I think grudens name and demeanor is attractive, pete caroll dominated at SC. Ive read all of pete carolls books and followed him closely over the years. Pete could win in the SEC

take money out of our recruiting budget and pay Saban.. we don't need to spend money on recruiting with him as coach.. :)

I think timing right now should be the biggest concern. Alot of people would argue that Hart should wait till early Dec. to make a move if he is planning one. I think we would be setting ourselves up for problems if we do. IF Texas, Auburn, Arkansas, and other schools who have proven they will pay good money for coaches start a search before we do, I could see us losing out.

I still get a feeling Hart will hire Smart. It would make alot of sense that he hired Sal and even more so that Sal was willing to come here knowing the coaching situation. If it is Smart(Not in my top 10 choices), let's just announce it and move forward. Waiting till after the season/Bama's season would be devastating to our recruiting class for this year.

What about James Franklin? He doing a great job at Vanderbilt and really turned their program around.

HAHAH, just kidding I hate that guy with a passion.

I'll put this out here one time.

My family is very VERY well entrenched in the world of UT athletics for over 50 years. Everything my dad has told me that he has heard "through the grapevine" has come true... Beginning with the Fulmer/Majors situation (I was born in the 70's so before that I can't say). Every basketball hire/fire, every NCAA investigation, up through the Fulmer/Kiffin/Dooley saga. Everything he told me would happen, happened exactly the way he said it would. Now to the meat...

I know none of you know me, I don't post very often (maybe only once or twice). I generally lurk. I have been an avid reader of this board for several years and I do love my Vols. believe me, don't believe me, doesn't matter to me.

Phone call with my dad this morning. Four names:

Dooley (will get one more year. This is the most likely scenario according to him. They really respect the Dooley family and want to do right by them).
Gruden (supposedly he also wants one more year of MNF, but is really really itching to get back into coaching but wants to make a difference somewhere with "young people." To me this = college. He is very open to relocating full time to K-town and preliminary conversations have been good).
Gundy (young coach, established, has fire and principles and they feel he would be a great fit here).
Then my dad took a big *sigh* and said depressingly "I am also hearing Fulmer has made a few calls to gauge interest in bringing him back."

Take it for what it is worth to you. I have never had a reason to doubt what my dad has told me from the "grapevine" because he has always been correct. I don't know if there is anyone else out there that can corroborate any of this, but if you can, please do. I do not want to print misinformation or be a "troll."

Go Vols.

.

If true, why on Earth does he wan't to come back and do this so badly?? Is it completely self-serving like maybe still wanting that all time wins record at UT? Is he still that bitter about what happened and wants to try and prove to everyone that he can still coach? I just don't get why at his age he would even care THAT much about getting back into this.

I might be alone in this, but I would be really excited about the potential of Gundy.

His arrogance would be my guess.

I understand this completely. However, he is a Vol for 35+ years. Maybe he thinks that he wronged us for his last year and has gotten refreshed and wants to be the guy that righted Vol Football.

I mean how many times in our lives have we messed up and wanted to be the one to fix it.

I don't question Fulmer's motives on this. Quite admirable IMO

Because he loves Tennessee?

If he truly loves Tennessee then he needs to step aside and allow Hart to do his job by finding us the right coach to lead us into the future. He needs to posess enough self awareness and honesty to realize that he had allowed the program under his watch to deteriorate into a bottom feeder in the SEC. He needs to understand that he is 4 years older, 4 years removed from coaching, and that this conference has only gotten tougher, more competitive since he was fired. If he truly loves Tennessee then he needs to do it from the sky box.

Mike Bellotti, former Oregon coach and AD, current ESPN analyst. He was the one that "found" Kelly and made him his successor.

The Fulmer part does not surprise me.

The post was Fulmer had made calls to gauge interest in bringing him back.

It did not say there was any interest.

I would think this is standard Fulmer, throwing his name out, hoping some AD will bite.

I would bet Fulmer has been in contact with his old comrades telling them what a failure Dooley has been . Typical Fulmer

It would not be a big name, but if the big names all say no, they could certainly do worse than June Jones. He's pretty good everywhere he's been. Certainly not an exciting hire, but better than what we have, and wouldn't have to go the assistant route.

FULMER:eek:lol:

The man is waiting in the wings, and could get a call. I know nothing, just an opinion.

I do feel he would return with a new passion, fire, whatever you want to call it and be much better than some of the names being thrown around. Besides, just think of what a great movie it would make. Fulmer comes back as head coach after being fired and out of coaching for 4 years to lead UT to 3 National Championships before retiring and handing the program over to his offensive coach Manning. :whistling:

Pete Carroll --No, Just NO. Back to the west coast ASAP.
Jim Tressel -- OH HELL NO, can't beat an SEC team.
Bob Stoops -- an option
Gary Patterson -- an option
Bobby Petrino -- NOT AN OPTION
Jon Gruden -- I'm making 10 mil a year not you want to give me 5 mil. LOL
Chris Petersen -- If he will leave
Mike Gundy -- an option
Bret Bielema -- Team has fell off this year
Dana Holgorsen -- Hes got some players making him look good.
Dan Mullen -- If all else fails
Pat Fitzgerald -- interesting, he beat candy.
GBO!

Your whole rant would make alot of sense IF you knew for a fact that Fulmer had even made the call to inquire about coaching at UT. As it stands, not so much.

As an OSU fan as well as UT. I would say tressel maybe? At least he can recruit and win I would hate to take another protege or up and comer. We need wins or this AD is going to look like our economy

Jim Tressel would be a disaster at Tennessee. Not because he is a bad coach (he clearly isn't), but because he coaches an entirely different system. The Rich Rodriguez experiment at Michigan should serve as an example of what would happen if Tressel were to come here.

We'd have to spend at least three years recruiting and replacing our current roster with they type that work in Tressel's system. That means we'd be at the bottom of the SEC for those three years and we'd be right back where we are today in 2015 because bandwago fans have no patience.

Agree. Don't want Tressel.

If we are going to be unrealistic and hope for Gruden I say we go for Bill Belichick.

I have always thought Gruden was a pipe dream of many on VN.
With his comments he is ready to get back in coaching and helping young people. He MAY be open to discussions. We do have the talent to compete and think.of the impact he would have on recruiting.

If I were Hart I would be gauging interest.
