Available Coaches

Malzahn certainly had success as an OC, and he is now a HC. How's he doing? Anybody know?

Chavis might or might not be HC material; he doesn't even like to recruit, and I don't see him leaving LSU.

I like Eric Mangini. You know hes tired of messing with Skip Bayless.

You know, I didn't think anyone else would suggest it, but I've been thinking Mangini lately too. I think we need someone young with an ego who wants to be a winner. After 3 years of constant excuses coming from the top and being absorbed by the players, we need someone with some swagger. Mangini knows football. He wasn't a winner as an NFL HC, but then Carroll wasn't either. I think Mangini could put a top notch staff together and I think he could come here and sell NFL prep and recruit and get us back to some semblance of national prominence. Like Kiffin was doing before he bolted (and Mangini can actually talk in front of a camera). I mean, he wouldn't be my top choice and he would be a gamble, but I'd rather take a gamble on someone like that than an aging coach like Cutcliffe that has proven he's utterly average as a HC throughout his career. And I think if you couldn't get Mangini, Josh McDaniels might have similar qualities.

Well said. I am actually a Mangini fan. He wouldn't be at the top of my list, but definitely near the top. And I think we could probably get him. Josh McDaniels is an interesting concept. I hadn't considered him, but he definitely has what it takes to go against Saban.

Trust me you don't want McDaniels anywhere close to Knoxville.

There is too much nonsense in this thread to bother reading it all. After looking through the first 3-4 pages, it is safe to say that most of you are not in touch with reality. Let's remember some of the rumors/specualtion from our last coaching searches.

Gruden is not going to coach college football.
Stoops already turned us down.
Peterson already turned us down.
Kelly already turned us down.

Taking over a program in distress that has to play UGA, UF, UA, and USCe every year with a limited recruiting base is not that attractive. Especially if you are already at a top program.

I do not believe that any head coach out there who is currently considered an elite coach would take the UT job. If we make a change, we will have to gamble on an unproved coach or coordinator.

Why not? Tradition, top notch facilities, massive recruiting budget, diehard fanbase, and the chance to compete in the best conference in the country.

Lovie still circling?
Better act fast. That plane will run out of fuel at some point.

I think he would be a superstar in college, but he probably knows he'll get another shot in the NFL so he stay put.

The real drawback would be a fragile fan base counting down the day until USC came calling. :whistling:

I am going on record now. IF I had to hire a guy today, I would hire Petrino. I saw an interview he did on TOS with ESPN in August and I think hiring the guy would be a good thing for UT & for Petrino. People make mistakes. He is owning up to his and I think he could get us back to winning right away. There would be no year 0 with him. 3 million, go get it done Hart. JMO

For me I don't have the ethical issue that others on the board have. My problem is that once he leaves...there is always a huge mess to clean up. It is very similar to what used to happen with Lou Holtz.

Good offensive mind -- terrible defensive mind

How about a silent (wall street) offer of 2 million dollars a year raise to Spurrier? He's arrogant enough to consider it I think. He's only at USC for the check imo. No loyalty there I don't think.

Why not try and get chavis back as head coach and def cord. That's 2 in 1. And then hire an off cord that can call a run play on 2nd and short or 3rd and 1 instead of slinging it 20 yards down the field to noone. I think I could have won that game last night. We were running the ball extremely well, so why not keep pounding, wear the D down, and then pass when they are exhausted? I don't get it.

Or get coach back from DUKE. I mean duke had not won a game in 3 seasons before him, and now Cutcliffe has them almost bowl eligible. I don't get why we didn't give him the head coaching job.

Chavis is a great defensive coordinator. However, he wasn't a very good recruiter and didn't like recruiting. At LSU, he doesn't have to carry the recruiting torch.

Cutcliffe, with Eli Manning, still couldn't get it done at Ole Miss and was fired. He is doing fine at Duke, but he is playing in the ACC which is a completely different situation.

We need to go in a different direction.

I get he had a couple bad things take place. I would offer him a 5 years deal with huge clauses to protect UT in his contract. He knows he screwed up and he would not have alot of pull at the bargaining table. I think he would sign a fair deal very quickly. Maybe he does cause an issue at UT at some point 3-4 years from now. I will take that along with winning now, and deal with possible issues 4 years from now. JMO
