Avery Johnson to Alabama

He seems like a really nice guy and Alabama bball just doesn't bother me much but there is no way you can call this a home run hire. He has been off the radar for a while. Though while with Dallas they did go to the Finals in '06 and probably should have beaten the Heat. They also won 67 games in '07 but lost in the first round to Golden State as a #1 seed which is unheard of in the NBA. It was all downhill from there for Avery.

Pretty underwhelming hire. Unsuccessful NBA head coaches are a dime a dozen. Johnson has never even been an assistant in the college game.

He probably won't be the worst coach in the SEC but I'd be pretty pissed if we hired someone like this.

Who will be the worst ?

Why do I get the feeling AJ was close to losing his shot as commentator/analyst and this was a safe place to land?

Rick Pitino and John Calipari say "Hi"

How is this even moderately relevant? Calipari and Pitino are proven college winners. Avery Johnson is a pro coach fired for not being able to relate to talent and replaced by a coach that won a championship with the team he couldn't.

It was all downhill once he took over a half-ass organization in NJ. Dallas fired him after going 51-31. Take out the train wreck that was the Nets for awhile and he was 194-70 in Dallas. That's not failing in my book in any form.

I'm pretty sure that Avery Johnson was not the name on the lips of Alabama when they decide to open their pocket books for a basketball coach. I would not trade Barnes for AJ, and I'm not implying that Barnes is a "great" coach.

He failed in the playoffs with a championship caliber team. Big time.

We praise our hiring of a guy that just wins enough games and gets in the tourney every year and then laugh at a program more mediocre than ours that does the same thing except their coach did it at the highest level. Irony.

BTW I'm ecstatic over the Barnes hire and I'm also not willing to write Avery off yet.

Kinda like hiring an offensive coordinator who spent the last two years in an adminstrative position that oversaw every sport except football.

Not exactly an apples to apples comparison or even apples to oranges...more like apples to fried chicken. DeBord is just an assistant.

He's not our head coach. DeBord also has extensive college experience. Johnson has zero experience in the college game.

One who has a national championship ring doing his job. Johnson may be a great hire, however. I have no idea to be honest.

I have no opinion on it. I thought Grant was a sure thing, and he was as mediocre as one could want.

Johnson may be great, he may be a disaster, or he may be anything in between.

I agree mostly. The team that won the championship had 2 players left over from AJ's team, so not the same team.
