Avery Johnson to Alabama

He will need to hire a recruiter who has ties with the high school coaches.
He is a bit removed from that world.

A&M's recent Top 5 class was recruited to College Station by AverySr and Jr, he has recruiting ties. Look for Johnson Jr and some of his friends to transfer to Bama.

Wonder if Jr has to sit out a year - probably moving to your dad's team is a special circumstance.

This is great news for Tennessee. That's a bad hire by Alabama, no matter how you slice it. Why the hell did they go from backing up the Brinks truck for the hottest coach in college basketball to reaching for a has-been ex-NBA coach that was nowhere to be found on anybody's radar, college or pro?? Thanks "Tennessee Bill Battle"!!

For Phase II- Encourage/force Saban into retirement (the game has "passed him by," or something along those lines). Tell Kirby to kick rocks. Then, "promote from within" and name Kiffin HC.

Came into this thread to gather general reaction, LOL'd as first few posters called it good or great. Dude sucks, Alabama will be starting another coaching search by 2020.

Lol. Alabama went with name alone on this one. If Avery was a good coach, he would still be coaching in the NBA

Avery was a good NBA coach. Biggest issue was that his style seemed to have a limited shelf-life. Not that dissimilar from Jim Harbaugh in that regard.

It's a great (if albeit risky) hire for Bama and a great move by Johnson. His style is probably better suited to the college game than the NBA anyway.

Though, I will say that I'm still shocked that Anthony Grant was such a flop at Bama. He was considered the "next big thing" in coaching at one point in time. Goes to show that virtually all hires have risk involved, even the ones that look like a sure-thing.

We praise our hiring of a guy that just wins enough games and gets in the tourney every year and then laugh at a program more mediocre than ours that does the same thing except their coach did it at the highest level. Irony.

BTW I'm ecstatic over the Barnes hire and I'm also not willing to write Avery off yet.

Thats the VN way brother

It was all downhill once he took over a half-ass organization in NJ. Dallas fired him after going 51-31. Take out the train wreck that was the Nets for awhile and he was 194-70 in Dallas. That's not failing in my book in any form.

Yeah, but he took over another Jersey team, this one just happens to be in Alabama.

Not sure where this is a homerun like I've seen people say. The guy isn't a good coach IMO. I could see him getting decent talent but its only a matter of time before they realize he sucks with a clipboard.

Yep, only the worst coaches in the world win the NBA COY award.

It's so easy to win 60 games in the NBA.

I'm having trouble, but i think this is sarcasm? At least i hope it is.

I think it was a good hire. He's a former NBA COY, won the Western Conference one year, has good connections with AAU coaches in Texas. People's knock on him is that he's been out of coaching for 2 years but they're probably the same ones who wanted Pearl back, he was out for 5 years.

Relative to Alabama basketball this is a good hire

Alabama basketball has basically never been relevant in its entire history. I think Avery Johnson will improve them.
