Azzanni wants 4

I agree with the speed however, with his size I would question the endurance. Overall, I believe he will be utilized well, but I think a lot of the receivers will contribute with the uptmepo office.

Croom is an every down receiver. He went through the same S&C program as everybody else his specialty will be that redzone and goal line threat on the fade route. I haven't heard anything about him not being an every down receiver from anybody.

Plus this staff likes WRs who can block. Croom has that going for him since historically CBJ's offenses have run the call so much.

I can't imagine a team that needs a WR like Croom more than UT. Why? We've got inexperienced QBs and inexperienced WRs. We need a big target who is a POSSESSION receiver, who can use his size to catch shortish passes and move the chains. If I were the offensive coaches, Croom and any other dependable possession receivers would be a big part of my tactical thinking. You can't overstate the importance of the short passing game in football--it is crucial.

Exactly and he is definitely a brotha that can block and hang with anybody. I'm excited and can't wait to see him on the field with North. I don't care what they say this corps is going to be NASTY.

I would not be surprised if he's UT's best deep threat. He has more than sufficient speed. Few DB's in the country have the size and physicality to fight him for the ball.

Nothing against Croom but IMO, I do not think he will be an everydown WR, I see him more of a third down WR or a Goal Line Receiver. He is big and strong and can out muscle for the hard cathes. But in this uptempo offense, the speed may be a problem. So, I would think you will see Pig, North, and Jenkins with a rotation at 4th based on situation.

Not trying to be a jerk but what are you basing this on?? He is a big guy so you assume that he isn't fast or in shape??

Be honest.... have you seen him play or practice even ONE time?? I haven't.

I may have missed him getting a couple of snaps last year or something but.... I haven't watched one single practice, he wasn't in the O&W game and he barely played last year.

I'm just curious how some of you guys come up with your conclusions??

And I'm not saying he isn't gonna be good but, from what little I saw out of pig last year I didn't see much production, granted he was a true freshman so I'm not gonna jump to conclusions. I just don't see why everyone assumes he is gonna be the playmaker, especially with all of the practice reports of him dropping passes.

:hi:

*edit* I realize a big part of why I wasn't impressed with pig last year may be due to the former coaching staff. The plays they ran for him, similar to the ones they ran for darick his freshman year, were horrible.

How about every report that comes out about training camp? I've never watched a single practice, I've just heard EVERYONE else say he drops everything thrown his way.

Practice (not a game), but practice?!?

Seriously, that is concerning if he has drop issues at all (practice or game); however, last season, when he played, I thought he was reliable. I also remember him taking several tough hits, and holding onto the ball, after Bray led him into a defender....

Current dropped balls notwithstanding, I think our passing game is going to be at the very least, adequate. By game 4 or 5, dangerous due in large part to both the development of the WRs and fact we will have changeable parts. Changeable parts will be big, and I do mean big and bullish WRs, who alternate or get mixed with smaller speedier WRs. I think the change up will mess up DBs, CBs, and SSs. They will have to adjust back and forth between the WR combos we throw into the game. Add the danger of both main RBs ability to catch passes and become threats in an open field, we have a potentially dangerous team in the making.

Look for teams to play a bit scared and as a result, the running game being as good or better than last year. I think by the time we play Bama, even losing, they will be leery of us. We will actually make a game of it until their depth and overall talent do us in.

23 days people.... All of the receivers are BEASTS in their own talent. each one has a specialty and each one will bring a different dynamic to every play. they'll be position where and how they're needed.

so looking forward to getting this season started. They're working their butts off to get a ring this year.. let's just support them as VOLS should!!

AMEN?!

You cant really pass the ball w/o a running game.....

You have to be both vertical and lateral to do it.... but you can. UT's run game was not horrible last year. However the WR's were a very big reason it was not much better. CP was a terrible blocker... he was lost much of the time and seldom held his blocks. Hunter took no risks and particularly blocking. Chaney/Dooley failed to make them block and could not really alternate run blocking WR's in without tipping the opposing D.

I went from a huge JH fan last year to liking him but being pretty peeved at the same time. He had lots of critical drops... and generally speaking played it safe to protect his NFL assets. Others will excuse that as understandable... but I won't. Play for the team or sit the bench. It is better for the team as a whole if a guy with less talent willing to give everything plays in front of guys who are playing to protect their draft status.

Amen. How does JC feel about the development of the group? The practice reports make it sound as if the receivers are dropping too many passes.

Surely out of this group we can come up with 4 reliable players. They are young, but talent is not lacking. Hopefully one will step up to the challenge and be more than just reliable. We will need a WR who can stretch the defense and be a go to type of receiver, someone who is a deep threat. I think North can be that player for us. If the others can just be reliable at running routes correctly and catching the ball when thrown their way we will be okay. I cant forget they all got to do their blocking assignments downfield also. Our last group of all-sec WRS couldn't block downfield to save their life.

As big as Croom is, he may end up as a TE. He would be very difficult for a LB to cover and he's big enough to do some blocking. The great TE's are hybrid type players that are more receivers than blockers in today's game.

Dallas proved he could get deep last year. Pig has the speed to run by safeties. North has the speed. Blanc and Smith are both said to have very good speed. Young can run.

And I really like Croom as a deep threat. If he gets isolated on a CB then you have to like your 6'5" 230 lb WR vs CB's that are almost always 6' or under and usually less than 200 lbs.

If speed was all it took to be a deep threat though then BYU would never throw the deep ball. They do and have for a long time. Scheme and play design can make up for speed.

I used to believe the same thing but have begun to believe he won't. He appears to be a very good WR at that size.

Yeah, I just heard several guys on the radio saying he was having a tough time keeping his weight down. So I thought it might be a more natural position for him.
