Back to back years of finishing with a better class than Florida

Are you saying that LSU is our problem? We beat them 40-13 in Baton Rouge .... what distance are you referring to here?

Yes we woodshedded them in their own backyard to stop their 5 game win streak on us.
They just landed the #6 class in Kelly's first full year of recruiting.
Think they won an SEC Title and Natty not too long ago..................

With nothing else to go on I’ll take the star rankings but experience has shown that some kids are marketed better than others and some kids have been coached up (and trained up) in HS and just don’t have as much upside as we think all the guys coming out of HS should have. Ultimately we have to trust our coaches to target and recruit guys they think will make great players. And I’m more comfortable with the present staff than I have been in decades. I think we signed a great class and have a staff capable of developing them. Hope we can pull off the upset over Clemson and enter into 2023 strong.

Actually, the "Experts" don't agree. This century, only 2 programs have failed to play for a National title within 4 years of having two or more #1 recruiting class - FSU and USCw. Only 4 programs- Miami. FSU, UF, and USC didn't play for a Natty after a single #1 recruiting class.

Clemson is the only school to win a title this century without at least 1 Top 10 class, and they had DeShawn Watson. Auburn is another outlier with only one Top 10 class, and that team had Cam Newton and a boatload of luck with 2 miracle plays vs UGA and Bama.

Sorry. It's not as simple as signing a Top 15 class and coaching 'em up.

Do you have the counter data? Who did play with a #1 class? Like I can't imagine that is a lot of teams sharing that wealth... is not like there are lot of teams who get one-off classes with 6 5-stars.

I'm honestly not sure how you think our points are different - you completely agreed with my point that a class like Texas' is overrated. It's not like I'm saying getting top-end recruits doesn't matter. If you have 60 four star players on your roster since of them will play like how a five star is expected to. Obviously having 20 five stars is better than not.

No every signing class pans out , hopefully ours does. Love the direction we are headed though. Great coaching staffs make 3 and 4 star recruits become 5 by the time they leave.

Florida ain’t done yet check back in February and LSU, Georgia and Bama are in another stratosphere than us in recruiting. This class is very good for us though.

I am not surprised by our class (And I do like this class allot), after all...

Vols had #1 offense in the country, and were ranked the # one team in the country for a week,
Vols had the best QB in the SEC and the best wide receiver in the country, showing that our coach does develop players.
They got Nico (The best QB in the class) to commit early, which should have attracted great wide receivers.
They won 10 games for the first time in a long time, and they beat two rivals(FL & Bama) for the first time in years.
Our coach is the COTY
They stomped the eventual SEC West champ and beat UK like a drum.

So why wasn't our class even better? Heupel did everything right! What else could have Heupel done, (except for one game)? How did Florida even come close? What did their team/coach accomplish this year? I don't get it!

The larger point is that only Auburn in 2010 and Clemson in 14 were able to win a NC without having a #1 class. Look closely at those two exceptions:

Clemson had DeShawn Watson, and previously Dabo did a great job identifying and developing talent. They also benefitted from not getting bludgeoned by their ACC schedule.
Auburn had Cam Newton, AND was on the positive side of two of the craziest game e dings anyone has seen in their wins vs UGA and Alabama. Otherwise that one never happens.

You have to recruit at an ELITE level or you are likely setting your fans up for heartbreak.

Much of it likely boils down to geographic advantages some programs have over others. Florida signed 14 players from the State of Florida. Only 2 of them were 3 stars, and they are both BIG offensive linemen.

On the other hand, Tennessee's bottom 4 rated recruits, who are either signed or committed, are all instate TN kids nobody above them on the food chain was chasing.

Well... If we have to start competing with South Carolina for recruits, we'll need to seriously adjust our expectations. It's an average class by UT standards. Nothing more, nothing less. THIS was our year to have an elite Top 5 class. Those of you who think it will be better next year are being WAY too premature. I doubt we go 10-2 again. We'd better hope that 8-4 is our basement. I don't think elite recruits will be thrilled with 8-4. But you never know.

This. This class is not elite by any rankings. Sure, it's better on some but if we are neck and neck with South Carolina for recruits then we're competing for 2nd - 4th in the SEC East.

This class is average by UT standards because unless we're in the dumps then we're normally 11 - 15. Let's hope this staff gets more out of these players then the last few coaches.

I do like a lot of the commits but a lot of 3 stars.

This was one of the better defensive classes we’ve had in a long while. We’re improving in talent at some key areas there. Highest rated QB in two decades.

Georgia and Bama are still recruiting at super high levels that didn’t change but some saying Tennessee isn’t getting better. That’s just flat out wrong. Gap is narrowing some considering we’ve been under on scholarship players period. Talent and depth has been terrible. Tennessee is going to be a much better team on the defensive side of the ball with the additions of this class.
I think this makes a lot of sense. The defense recruiting is really super important for us. Our offense is awesome.

I think 5 years from now ppl will be saying the incoming freshmen class is not the barometer anymore. I think about 30 to 50% Will portal in 1 or 2 years, so iI think it’s still important but the patience to develop will not be there. When a player dont play earylike he either thought or was told. He decides you know Tech etc.. has a great NIL and I think I’ll just go there. Recruiting stil important but it’s gonna get dirtier they will stay in touch with outlier ppl to stay attached to player. It’s gonna be Vultures circling. But recruiting fun to talk about.

And he should. An elite QB is worth 10 4*s at other positions.

I wouldn’t trade our class for theirs. Wouldn’t even consider it.

Do you mean an elite QB like you had this year in Hendon Hooker?

Has Georgia fielded an elite QB under Kirby Smart?

5 SECC game appearances. 2 SEC Titles. 1 National Championship. 0 Elite QBs.

If you are building 30-50% of your roster from the portal then you aren't developing players. You'll still be 4-5 in the conference.

The recruiting rankings are still accurate but its a new ballgame. Every 5 star you recruit is going to expect heavy NIL money and early playing time. If they don't get it they are hitting the portal the first chance they get. TAM is a perfect example of this and the 6 5 stars that Bama recruited will not all see playing time there. There is no way to evaluate a class in this current system.

Elite college football programs will always be built primarily from high school recruiting.
