Bang Shootie conversation

Another thought, there are a bunch of Isreali k98's floating around (irony), some are sportorized. These are usually excellent shooters and are chambered in 7.62x51 instead of 8mm mauser. So much cheaper to shoot. Problem is most of these have gone up in price, but you might find one out there priced as regular old mauser by someone who doesn't know. Just like you can find Finish m39's priced as just another Mosin. If you see either of these mispriced jump at them.

BTW slice since you have an account would you mind telling me the price on the Universal M1A and Henry Long Ranger listed for murfreesboro? I'm too cheap to join atm.. :p And is that henry sold with or without scope and what is it?

Slice do you go to deadzero? I have extra guest passes just burning up and not being used if you ever wanted to check it out.

I don’t have an account but the guy across the street does. I’ll catch up with him tomorrow

Call of duty made them more famous.

More famous with kids. Fal's are arguably one of the greatest western civilization rifles fielded. Also plentiful in parts, mags and options. Another rifle one will usually never regret unless you have to carry it very far, like more than 20 yards). Been wanting to get an Airborne Fal for awhile. Just cause I feel incomplete without one.

Sorry for having to admit to having to look that rifle up, but dang, that is sweet. Love the overall appearance. Out of my budget at the sec, but They seem to be running 1200-1600.

Sounds great. I can shoot as poorly there as anywhere

My son may have missed his calling as a sniper. And in no way, shape, or form am I exaggerating this skill of his. He's 20yo next month. I used to shoot a bit back in the day (I'm 57 now), but together we just have not shot much. And on his own he just doesn't practice. Sooooo....

At 15 (maybe 14), he had never had the chance the drop a deer. And had never pulled the trigger on one. Or even pulled a trigger period. He was in a stand hunting with a cousin with one of his rifles. Super nice 8 point walks into field. Bout 175 yards. He just lays the rifle up, shoots a tad low and killed some Ga red clay. Deer stood fast. Sighted up his 2nd shot and dropped it like an ugly girl in the morning light. He's killed 4 bucks now. With a total of 6 rounds. THe only other time he has missed (and I mean the heart when he does shoot) the scope was loose and it was a monster rack. We went to the gun store had it re-mounted, and he went out 3 days later and dropped that sucker. He doesn't flinch. And he just doesn't miss. He started out his first deer with a big rack, so he just doesn't shoot whatever walks out. And he has a pretty good selection. He leaves the does alone cause we got a nice heard going and he wants them to keep pumping out healthy bucks. Which we have. If it's not bigger, or equal, to what he already has, it gets to walk. Outside of one sight session where we finally dtermined Marlin has put 30-30 front sights on the gun that are too short, the kid has literally shot less than 12 -16 rounds, and he was hitting one shot heart drops from the get go. Apparently no buck fever either, atleast till it's on the ground.

You can find them cheaper sometimes. They are cool old battle rifles, but from a purely functionality point of view there's many better options now. The main reason to get a Fal, a PTR (G3) or a Galil is for the historical aspect. An AR-10 platform, Tavor, Ace or Socom in 308 are arguably all more refined platforms now. Just my opinion though.

So Just wondering what is he really wanting in this rifle your looking for now? A Milsurp for historical collecting? An accurate and handy hunting rifle? Or something more for target shooting? Just wondering because if it's mainly for hunting, we been answering the original question all wrong. Also what sort of rifle does he already have?

25 years later those kids are men now.

He clarified a little bit. He's more interested in a vintage hunting type rifle. There are some affordable still. But the 1st one that came to mind for me (Savage 99) are stroking 1300$ and up now. A milsurp in a good all-purpose caliber that can be used for hunting, and reliable, is not totally out of the question. Alot of the milsurps have been used extensively for the wall, pleasure shooting, and hunting so I don't consider them eliminated from the choice box.

We used to have a Ruger 44 semi-auto that was my dads I used when teenager and we have no idea where it went. I saw the prices now on that rifle and they are stroking 2500 plus. To only have the things you used to have. My 90's era BAR .270 is double now what I paid for it then. THis is gonna take some good shopping.

He currently has a Mossberg .243 and a Marlin 30-30.

For me personally, I'd be looking for a 6.5x55 swede. That bullet will challenge any .308 at the range. Very accurate. And for the recoil conscious, a much better shooting experience.

If it were me....I'd start with something quality and affordable new, and then start the process of upgrading.

You can not go wrong with a Remington 700 Varmint. Might as well go with the 243's replacement, the 6.5 Creedmore as it's the new "thing" and ammo should be here awhile, as everybody and their brother is getting 6.5 now. It can be had under $500

Then start upgrading, get a nicer McMillian or other stock, get a nice steel bottom for mags, get an oversized bolt upgrade, timney trigger etc......build it over time into that 1000 yarder....

This started as a 700 243 Varmint. It got turned into an Marine Sniper M40A4 clone. It's had about everything upgraded and will hold it's own with $3000 rifles. Have nailed a 4inch plate at 1,000 with some help from a buddy who had some hot loads, and mentored me a bit, and I suck. Once the barrel gets squirrelly I'll change calibers likely.

If he's serious about marksmanship this will be a rifle he can turn into a precision tool over time.

Now if you wanted to pay more... that same friend of mine that mentored me is I think selling his two rifles he won multiple championships with. They are both in 308 and kitted out for 1,000 yard competition already a done deal and cheaper then you could build them yourself...but they'd prolly be 2-3k. (with optics) but no way you could ever build them that cheap....
