Fine with me, but if I'm Danny White I'm making a strong suggestion he get some outside help. Like a zero-based review of his offensive style (he seems to know defense) and maybe hire some of the "offensive consultants" like they do in football. As I've said to others, in a different context, if sh1t is dropping around you then MOVE, get off the X. He has his track record - not changing, or not trying to, is insane. He's a good coach - he's missing a couple of elements that can maybe put him over the top. However, not much will probably change where game day coaching is concerned.

It's stereotyped as a young man's job, and it is, but it really is amazing how old those guys are. 70 is pretty old to be working a cush office job, much less HC of a big time college basketball program.
60 is the new 40. People live longer now thanks to advancements in health care and live better thanks to eating better and working out. My mother, at 56, looked and acted older than I do at 56. Acting your age is a choice. I hope Rick Barnes coaches at UTK till he's 100.

I’m happy for coach Barnes and glad he got the extension. I hope he finishes with his head held high and retires at the end of his contract and doesn’t go out by being run out of town by volnation. That scares the crap outta me because if Barnes leaves who do we get next? Some unproven coach that may or may not work out? At least with Barnes we know he is gonna bring recruits in, he’s gonna have a good team and put them in position to make a run in tourneys. I hope he finally gets over the hump of the elite 8 before his days are over on Rocky top. GBO!!

This is great news. So now we get to keep our high odds to beat Kentucky each season through 2026-2027. Barnes > Calipari

Dislike Barnes’ coaching if you want. It’s America and you don’t even have to have a reason. But if you want to convince others that you’re right surely you can come up with something more legit than “he won’t change”? This year he completely adopted the latest style of passing on the midrange shots in favor of 3 pointers. Change of offensive philosophy happened this season.

Also had an NBA consultant on staff if I remember correctly

Seems more than appropriate. Barnes won the SEC tournament this year, first time in my lifetime and I'm old. Unfortunately Barnes team shot the ball incredibly horrible agaisnt Michigan, though. Tennessee would have matched up well against Villanova in the sweet 16.

I’m not into “match up’s” as that big of a thing anymore. It’s all three point shooting percentage and beneficial officiating. That’s what wins the tough games.

Barnes will be 68 this summer.
Pearl is 62 or will be in a week or two.
Izzo is 67.
K is 75.
Pitino will be 70 before next season.
Boeheim 77.
Roy was 70 when he retired a year ago.
Bob Huggins is a year older than Barnes.

Ray Mears stepped down at 50 years old. He lost to Boeheim in his last game.
Mears retired because of illness. He was one hell of a coach and his teams were very intertaining as well as winning a lot of basketball games with less than 5 star talent. Remember, he lost a couple of years of coaching years due to illness during his coaching stay at Tennessee.

It is, but these kids of jobs are absolutely exhausting. They'd wear out most 40-year-olds, much less someone pushing 70.

Good news.

No reason to be stupid and fire him just to end up with an up & comer coach.

Florida and Georgia didn’t set the world on fire replacing their previous coaches. JS.

And last thing I read on USCjr is their coaching search is a debacle right now.

Georgia hires Mike White, Florida hires Todd Golden, South Carolina hires Lamont Paris, Missouri hires Dennis Gates and LSU hires Matt McMahon…I’m sure some folks are higher on some of these guys than others, but I think it’s clear that across the board nobody hit a sure fire home run that Tennessee fans would look at and majority would say damn, I wanted that guy.

My point being, not easy hiring coaches and less and less established coaches are moving on from what they have to go somewhere new.

I think that Barnes is the only TN coach that has ever won 4 straight post season games. Several have won three straight. Devoe won 4 of 5 in the 1985 NIT. Wade, Green, Pearl, and Cuonzo have won 3 before losing the fourth. But the guy that the dolts call Regular Season Rick seems to have just done what no other TN coach has ever done.

All this talk is why I say "enjoy the success of the program now.... because it's hard to get to this level and stay here". Same goes for the current success of Tony Vitello and baseball!

Not prepared to say he’s a better coach than Barnes but he could end up being better
I'd bet that if he and Barnes stay at their current spots the next four years, Musselman will have more NCAAT wins in that period than Barnes.
