Barnes on JJJ and JP - "it's up to them“

I agree and have thought this for awhile but last season proved it. If you have an NCAA spot locked down the SEC tourney does nothing for you. I would rest my starters and play the reserves and get healthy for NCAA.

Best thing are for the players to get physicaly fit where they are able to play several minutes per game..With all the timeouts and tv ads there is no reasom a player shouldnt be able to play the whole game

Vols will be one and out in SEC Tourney and will be a 5 seed that loses to a 12 in the NCAA Tourney......

I strongly disagree re: Phillips. He's a freshman with loads of upside and reportedly a great work ethic. "Moving on" from him is a weird take. He could be the bucket-generator on offense next year that we've lacked for years.
Phillips will not be back next year, he will be a low 1st or early 2nd rd pick

Great kid no doubt. I'm moving on from him because I don't see him in orange next year. I've seen multiple mock drafts that have him in the mid to late first round. I know you don't turn 'em down or not recruit the one and done guys, but I'm just not a fan of these situations. Hey, maybe he does come back or his performance drops him to mid to late second round? We'll see I guess, but I'm not optimistic.

Bob asked Barnes on the radio after the game if he knew when they would be back and Banes said i have no idea you would have to ask the trainer.
What kind of response is that from a Head Coach. A Head Coach should be aware of every part of his/her program and every team member’s physical ability to play, Barnes has never accepted responsibility for anything during his career as far as it affects the team. He’s too busy coaching “dribble dribble pass pass offense” out front until “oops 5 seconds on the shot clock” and we should get a shot up. PATHETIC

You are FOS
This. It was said he was cleared to play last night, no different than the knee at the beginning of the season. There’s a difference in being injured and being hurt/in pain. It seems as though JJJ has trouble with the latter. Meanwhile, Santi has had a 103 degree fever since Sunday and went to the staff before the game and said he wanted to give it a go and played his ass off.
.
Have you ever had an injury that required surgery and rehab? To me, the psychological aspect of it was worse than the physical and the physical sucked really bad.

You are blind if you think that’s what he teaches, it’s clear that he concentrates on defense.

I'm far from a Barnes apologist/defender, but I can't support this position. Barnes cannot and should not go against medical advice from his training staff. If they don't clear a kid, that's the end of it. For whatever reason, JJJ and Phillips aren't playing. So I'll focus on the guys that are out there playing sick, playing tired, playing beaten and banged up. My only concern with the bench players is getting those able and willing into the games more often to help lighten the load for those overworked and worn out. JJJ and Phillips need to do their thing while we focus on the remainder of a season circling the drain.

Phillips may be, but I just havent seen enough in him to think he is even remotely good enough to be in nba
I agree, I don't think he is strong enough or aggressive enough for the NBA (yet), but the NBA will judge him on potential and assign him a draft grade.

Last one I saw didn’t have him drafted at all.

Correction. I was referencing this one. Has him at 52nd overall. Must’ve missed that the first time I looked.

I posted this in another thread, but...

Jonathan Givony just posted a 2024 NBA Mock Draft on ESPN, and in it he includes Julian Phillips at #14, which insinuates that Phillips will return to school. He then goes on to talk about how there has been a recent run of prospects who returned to school for a year and improved their stock (Keegan Murray, Jaden Ivey, Benedict Mauthurin, Johnny Davis, Tari Eason, Dalen Terry), and how Phillips needs to fill his body put, work on his shot, and how he's looked like the game moved a little fast for him on both ends of the court at times.

If we hadn’t won it last year, I’d be less inclined to feel that way. We had an SECT monkey on our backs, having not win it since 1979 and in many years, lost to inferior trend when we were the top team in the SEC (or at least near the top).

But we won it last year, removed that money, and now we need to remove the NCAAT monkey. The best way to do that is her healthy and rested. I’d prefer to do what Arkansas did last year.

Yep, exactly how I feel. Maybe if we don't win it again for 5-10 years I'll start to feel differently and get back into it, but right now it feels like we did that so let's get back to the E8 and get that monkey off our backs.

JJJ says he’ll play Saturday barring a setback, I think you’ll see Phillips out there too…maybe finally at full strength again.
Easy opponent so both should be able to have great games and help their draft stock. Hopefully when we have the tougher teams to contend with they don't have unexpected setbacks that will lead to them being back on the bench. As for full strength, the count will be full but the added burden of those two being sidelined has clearly taken a toll. Recoverable in time to truly be full strength come NCAAT time? No idea.

ZZ gets plenty of rest cause he commits dumb fouls and has to sit. Another reason why Barnes should have gotten Edwards minutes in those blowouts early in the season. We need a backup PG.
You're half right. We need a backup PG. On the other hand, ZZ commits fouls because aggressiveness is the one advantage he has. Do you have any idea what it is like to play D1 basketball as a 5'7-5'8 player? I will leave your dumb take at that.

We have an excellent starting PG. Enjoy him while he is here. Don't let the frustration of a few losses cloud clear thinking.
I love the guy and glad he’s here. His size limits him from being “the guy” for 30+ minutes over the long season. He’s capable of being a star any given night. I just think he’s better off the bench.

He isnt excellent yet. Maybe he will be, but he also has some shortcomings (no pun intended) that aren't talent related. He needs to learn to play within his limitations on offense and stop trying to "out athlete" guys that have every physical advantage over him.

He is learning. Going to be something special before he leaves.

I'm fine with agreeing to disagree. Since his insertion into the starting lineup, his assist number has dramatically gone up. They've only recently taken a hit because offensively we have been severely limited. He's a starting PG in my eyes.
