Barnes on JJJ and JP - "it's up to them“

This link shows what is paid for first rounders Rookie Scale Salaries For 2022 NBA First-Round Picks
I was trying to figure out if you meant mid-round as in middle of the round, or middle of the draft. The draft only has two rounds, so I was curious what middle round referred to.

In either case, that was a 2024 mock draft, meaning JP is seen as someone who will be coming back to school in order to get that middle round money next year.

Bob asked Barnes on the radio after the game if he knew when they would be back and Banes said i have no idea you would have to ask the trainer.
That’s why we pay him $5 million. I dunno. Surely he has to realize how stupid that sounds

Yep. I know the hay is pretty much in the barn this season, but again, I'd take my lumps from here on out and play my bench. Greatly limit practices, too. Yeah, we'll lose out except for maybe SCjr, but what does it matter? With this roster, any opponent as a 3-5 will likely send us home. Get some fresh legs and pray you can get back to playing great defense and maybe we get a game or two where we get favorable matchups and some hot shooting.

If you're as premature in your grass cutting, your hay bales must be like 10 inches long.

He was cleared to play. That’s not debatable. His comfortability and confidence is another point and is viable but it doesn’t change the fact that he was medically able to play.
How is it not? Where was this shared? From what I’ve heard the trainers didn’t clear either of them.

I mean, he's not wrong. He's certainly not going to say they've been healthy for a week, they just won't get out there. He has to defer to the players and the training staff on injuries. He doesn't have a magic 8 ball.

What would you answer? Or better yet, how do you want him to answer that question?
I didn't listen to the interview and as someone else added it isn't actually what he said. Evidently they were cleared medically but the trainers had a say.

What kind of response is that from a Head Coach. A Head Coach should be aware of every part of his/her program and every team member’s physical ability to play, Barnes has never accepted responsibility for anything during his career as far as it affects the team. He’s too busy coaching “dribble dribble pass pass offense” out front until “oops 5 seconds on the shot clock” and we should get a shot up. PATHETIC
100% of coaches keep a firewall between player health and their availability for a game. By leaving the decision with trainers, they limit liability and remove the perception of impropriety. Players play when trainers clear them. That’s how it goes.

They were not cleared. Santi did not have three days of 103 fever either. He had a virus. He got fluids. He was always going to play. JJJ will go based on mobility. He’s been a little better every day. He’ll probably go Saturday. Phillips is graded on pain, has scrimmaged and will probably go Saturday.

Trainers know that adrenaline and game excitement make players want to believe they’re healed. They agree on baseline tests to make it easier to know when they’ve gotten well enough to play. They don’t walk by a player, listen to their heart, and “clear” them. They test them against an agreed metric.

And they can't/won't until the player tells them he feels ready to return. Bottom line is that Barnes was right. It is up to JJJ and Phillips to decide when/if they return.

Don't know the numbers, but I'd be shocked if JJJ has played half of this season.

The real concern is not when those two finally get back, but what's left of this short roster as a result of playing so many minutes. Barnes went into this season gambling on having only 1 legit PG. He's been lucky to avoid injuries, but ZZ and others are just flat worn out. Barnes rolled the dice in the portal and lost. He also chose not to use Edward early because "he's not ready". Well, now you pay for those decisions. If Barnes doesn't do something to cut the minutes and get these kids rested, it won't matter when/if JJJ and Phillips come back. Those two aren't going to carry this team past the first weekend if the rest of the team is wasted.

Hate to be "that guy" but one other thing strikes me. I'm pretty sure Vescovi...in his last year as a Vol...knows he's not going to play in the NBA so he's playing sick. JJJ and Phillips both have eyes on the league and they aren't going to play sick or injured. Protecting themselves? Know this won't sit well with many, but it's not that far fetched IMO.
He refuses to play BJ Edwards, who looks like a very good offensive player. He just lets Vescovi and ZZ get run into the ground.

If you’ve watched Edwards in his limited minutes of late and said to yourself “how’s he not playing more” then I’m not sure we are watching the same sport of basketball.

My point was that even trainers cannot overrule how a player says he feels. If JJJ and Phillips say they don't feel ready, there's nothing anyone else can say or do. It literally is up to JJJ and Phillips.
Well sure, are you suggesting either of them aren’t being truthful with trainers about how they feel?

Right now, Edwards couldn't defend your mom, which is why he doesn't play more. He played 1 minute against A&M and gave up at least one free drive to the bucket, maybe two.

Not at all. Different folks have different levels of pain tolerance and define "hurt" vs "injured" differently. Add in a potential professional career and it is what it is. While I see things as a UT fan and don't follow pro sports at all, my perspective will certainly be misaligned with theirs. It's why I've said, in so many words, I wish 'em well and thanks for the memories, but I'm ready to see the roster change.

And those one or two drives could have been the difference in TN winning or losing that game. The lead was cut to 1 a couple of times near the end.

ZZ’s biggest issue is that when he’s on the floor he might be the most likely threat to score. He draws too much attention from defenses. If he had at least one teammate that was a bigger threat to score then he wouldn’t be drawing so many double and triple teams as he gets to the basket. He does have help from Santi or even Key, but when ZZ is being smothered under the basket those open in the perimeter are hard to find. Imagine if he had an Edey to shuffle the ball to. Or even Phillips slashing through the paint. Aidoo and Awaka will be those type of players (not slashers but instead posting up down low) with just a little more experience. Uros and ON aren’t. JJJ is another perimeter guy. Mashack might actually be somebody that can grab a ZZ dish in the paint and finish - although he’s slightly on the short side. But Mashack is explosive.
Have you not been watching Santi play his guts out lately? He’s are best scorer at the moment. I would like to see Mashack attack the basket more if he can hit FTs at a 75% clip.

Barnes doesn't give young players the playing time to learn and grow defensively. If you don't let him play through mistakes, then he will never be given the opportunity to improve. He's like this with guards. He'll let Maishak and Awaka play through mistakes, but not Edwards.
