Barnes on JJJ and JP - "it's up to them“

I'm far from a Barnes apologist/defender, but I can't support this position. Barnes cannot and should not go against medical advice from his training staff. If they don't clear a kid, that's the end of it. For whatever reason, JJJ and Phillips aren't playing. So I'll focus on the guys that are out there playing sick, playing tired, playing beaten and banged up. My only concern with the bench players is getting those able and willing into the games more often to help lighten the load for those overworked and worn out. JJJ and Phillips need to do their thing while we focus on the remainder of a season circling the drain.
USCe isn't very good and would be a good time to play BJ Edwards early and often to relieve the other guards. I wouldn't think we need James or Phillips to rush back for that game.

You're half right. We need a backup PG. On the other hand, ZZ commits fouls because aggressiveness is the one advantage he has. Do you have any idea what it is like to play D1 basketball as a 5'7-5'8 player? I will leave your dumb take at that.

Well even Barnes is on him about fouling so ZZ needs to realize he is needed on the floor and does us no good sitting on the bench.

He can be on him, because as a coach you always push your players to get better. Can he get better? Sure, but his style is what allows him to compete. You have to give a little in one area for him to be effective in another.

He isnt excellent yet. Maybe he will be, but he also has some shortcomings (no pun intended) that aren't talent related. He needs to learn to play within his limitations on offense and stop trying to "out athlete" guys that have every physical advantage over him.
In my opinion, Wade Taylor is the best PG in the league. His stats are 15.9 ppg, 4.1 ass., 1.8 stl, 2.6 to. ZZ' s stats are 11 ppg, 5.3 ass., 2 stl, 2.3 to. As a point of reference Chandlers stats were 13.9, 4.7, 2.2, 2.5 TO.

I think we have an excellent PG. We need another one too.

I’d be fine with a one and out in Nashville to get these guys some rest. Mainly ZZ.

We broke a long SEC tournament championship drought last season so going one and out in the SEC tournament would not be a bad thing.

James and Phillips need to be ready for the NCAA Tournament because without them this team probably gets knocked out in the second game of the first weekend.

ZZ’s biggest issue is that when he’s on the floor he might be the most likely threat to score. He draws too much attention from defenses. If he had at least one teammate that was a bigger threat to score then he wouldn’t be drawing so many double and triple teams as he gets to the basket. He does have help from Santi or even Key, but when ZZ is being smothered under the basket those open in the perimeter are hard to find. Imagine if he had an Edey to shuffle the ball to. Or even Phillips slashing through the paint. Aidoo and Awaka will be those type of players (not slashers but instead posting up down low) with just a little more experience. Uros and ON aren’t. JJJ is another perimeter guy. Mashack might actually be somebody that can grab a ZZ dish in the paint and finish - although he’s slightly on the short side. But Mashack is explosive.

Seems to be his go to answer. Said the same thing about Turner when he couldn't lift his arm above his shoulder.

He was 16-17 from the line, last night. Like 93% in SEC games and over 85% for the season. Automatic

BTO, do you think the committee will take into account our injuries In the majority of our losses come seeding time?
FWIW .... Only to a very limited extent ... if they have lots of sample size AND there is a NOTICEABLE difference after players are back ... maybe a little ... but not much ... maybe a seed line or two depending on where they fall in the field, that is the best case. .... the foregoing is a summary of the rhetoric that has been posted by the committee members in the past. The impact is mitigated by some members who refuse to accept returning players as a catalyst or missing players as a negative.

Since JJJ is fresh as daisies, let him be a point forward and give ZZ a game off against USC. Surely JJJ can give us 35-38 min with all the rest he's had?

Even Jimmy Dykes questioned on air why he wasn’t playing after watching him in pregame warmups.
Jimmy Dykes needs to STHU. He’s a failed women’s coach.

Listen, you can hate on Jimmy Dykes all you want but his assessment in this situation was correct. I say that as someone who was there at the game last night. They both participated fully in warmups and drills and neither seemed to have any mobility issues. JJJ even dunked it at one point. If you had no idea either were hurt, you wouldn’t have known it watching them warmup.

There’s a difference in warming up and being 100% ready to go against a physical team like A&M…it’s a great sign they went through the warmups fully, but risking aggravation of injury and missing another 3-4 weeks rather than 1 more game would be foolish.

He is learning. Going to be something special before he leaves.

I hope so. He's obviously been better than most people expected him to be. Players under Barnes have a tendency to plateau at a certain point, but hopefully he will continue to develop.

Chandler and Zakai were freshmen together, and I think pretty much everyone would agree that Chandler was the better player as a freshman. ZZ is a good PG, but his problem is the same problem that our whole team is having right now: consistency. We definitely need more help at guard, but more than anything we need offensive weapons around a player like ZZ. He isn't a good shooter and he takes a lot of tough layups (and misses a fair amount of them). If we had guys around him who were offensively capable, he could average 8-10 points a game plus 7-8 assists and be a much more efficient and effective player.

Jimmy was absolutely correct. I guess it's easier to come back against a weak ass South Carolina.

This almost feels like a Jerry Green Scenario

You are FOS

.
Have you ever had an injury that required surgery and rehab? To me, the psychological aspect of it was worse than the physical and the physical sucked really bad.
He was cleared to play. That’s not debatable. His comfortability and confidence is another point and is viable but it doesn’t change the fact that he was medically able to play.

What would you answer?
I mean, he's not wrong. He's certainly not going to say they've been healthy for a week, they just won't get out there. He has to defer to the players and the training staff on injuries. He doesn't have a magic 8 ball.

What would you answer? Or better yet, how do you want him to answer that question?
