Barry or Emmitt

Baker, emmitt over Barry? Serious? I was a a bigger fan of emmitts than any vol fan should rightly be of a former gator, and even I think Barry was clearly the better player.

Not to discount either, both are shoe in HOF but Barry IMO is the 2nd greatest raw talent to ever hold a football.

Looking at their respective running styles, I wonder how each player would have fared had they not spent the majority of their careers running on AstroTurf.

You sure about that? Payton played 13 seasons and Smith broke the record in his 13th. I'm pretty sure Smith played in a lot more postseason games. Also, Payton had the abbreviated '82 season.

I don't think postseason stats count towards that number, but you do bring up an interesting point. I wasn't so sure Emmit didn't play in more games.

emmitt playing a quarter of a playoff game against the giants while he had a separated shoulder was the embodiment of toughness. however barry had greater athletic prowess and was a better runner. emmitt was a more complete running back i think as he was very good catching the ball as well. barry was more consistent though with his production over the length of his career. given the two on my team i would run barry until i c=got near the goal line, then give emmitt the ball as he seemed to be the stronger between the tackles runner.

I don't remember injuries being a big deal for either of them. Emmitt played 15 or so years, which is about all you could ever ask. I thought Barry's retirement had a lot to do with him realizing the Lions would never win squat.

Barry had a hamstring or groin issue one year and I believe he missed a game or two due to being poked in the eye.

That's about it.

Smith never missed any significant playing time either that I can remember. I do think he held out and missed a game or two over a contract didn't he?

I'm going Emmitt. Most accomplished player in NFL history. Maybe toughest dude to ever play the position. Also he was 100% dedicated to the sport. He wasn't quitting with the record in reach.

I don't think I agree with that.

Jerry Rice 207 touchdowns
Emmitt Smith 175 touchdowns

Doing that as a WR is more impressive. Also, Joe Montana is more accomplished as well.

Barry was a much better runner. Emmitt was a better running back with blocking and goal line situations.

sanders missed 5 games in 93 because of a knee injury on thanksgiving. he still had over 1000 yds that year. came back in 94 with 1800 yds. sadly he didn't get many td's in his career. only 109 total with 99 rushing.

Barry was more talented. My thinking is Emmitt Smith is the most accomplished RB of all time. Talent isn't everything. Barry has the talent. Emmitt has the accomplishments.

It's almost like an MJ vs Wilt discussion. Wilt and Barry had more talent. MJ and Emmitt had more drive, great talent, and the right situation to become the most accomplished players. I'll take those results over the superior talent Wilt and Barry had.
