Barry or Emmitt

Looking at LT's numbers vs his backups (because he retired today), I decided that data would be a nice addition to this convo.

1991: Emmitt - 4.3 ypc, Moose - 3.2 ypc
1992: Emmitt - 4.6 ypc, Richards - 3.6 ypc
1993: Emmitt - 5.3 ypc, Lassic - 3.6 ypc, Coleman - 3.9 ypc
1994: Emmitt - 4.0 ypc, Coleman - 2.8 ypc
1995: Emmitt - 4.7 ypc, Williams - 4.4 ypc

Most people say that Emmitt was overrated because his line was so good. I'd say these numbers suggest the line was overrated.

1990: Barry - 5.1 ypc, Gagliano - 3.2 ypc
1991: Barry - 4.5 ypc, Jackson - 3.2 ypc, Overton 4.3 ypc
1992: No other RB got more than 9 carries
1993: Barry - 4.6 ypc, Moore - 4.6 ypc, Lynch - 3.9 ypc
1994: No other RB got more than 27 carries
1995: Barry - 4.8 ypc, Rivers - 4.1 ypc
1996: Barry - 5.1 ypc, Rivers 4.5 ypc

It doesn't seem that Barry's line was as bad as people say it was.

YPC is not a good way to measure this. You did that in another thread.

Barry Sanders

two different type backs. imo

Emmit always followed assignments which turned out well considering he had great blockers at every position on the field.

Sanders made it up as he went.

That's not always a good thing. Drove Bobby Ross crazy. I'll take either one, I just think it's a lot closer than people tend to think. Sports fans tend to underrate the mundane (rebounds, ability to always get positive yardage, etc.).
