Basilio Said It Best

Can you guys honestly say you have faith in the powers that be to make the right decision when it comes to our next coach.

The reason many, including myself, want Pearl back was that he is the closest thing to a sure bet here.

That being said, I don't think Pearl will be back because of Cheek. We're going to hire another on-the-cheap mediocre coach.

Pearl wasn't a homerun hire when we got him. There are good coaches at the mid major level. You win gambling sometimes and you lose sometimes. Maybe we can win again.

Your reasoning is solid. I wonder why these few have such a hard time grasping it.

Because of the Show Claus..blah blah blah...bumpity bump...blah blah BBQ :scare:

Why take the gamble trying to find another Bruce Pearl when you can just hire Bruce Pearl?

If he wants to come back and it won't bring an immediate ncaa investigation, absolutely hire him. But if they don't want to shell out the money for him, there has to be other options.

I would guess that all the Pearl talk is only lending itself towards CCM bring retained. Imagine how insane the "bring back Bruce" talk would be if CCM was let go today.

I will give you that Dickey didn't care much for basketball, but to say he ran it into the ground is not completely accurate. Football and Basketball were both heathier when Dickey retired in 2002 than now. During the late 90's at the end of his career, UT Atheletics were as good as they have ever been, and produced as much revenue as just about anyone.

I really don't see how you can say that about basketball. When Dickey retired, that was Peterson's first season, a losing one. Peterson was worse here than Martin has been.

And I also fail to see how Dickey didn't run basketball into the ground. The man let Wade Houston coach here 5 years, took Jerry Green over Bill Self, built an arena that was too big, and encouraged/allowed the selling of UK merchandise when UK came to town. He was a terrible AD for basketball.

Martin is one conference win away from having the same amount of conference wins as Pearl did his last three seasons. Not that I think that he is the answer for Tennessee's problems but wins are wins. They also have the same amount of conference losses.

Silly me. I thought when Pearl was here we only played 16 conference.

It doesn't matter if Martin's teams played 20 conference games, The last three years of Pearl is 48 games (29-19-0 .604) and Martin's first three years is 47 games so far (28-19-0 .596). There is only ONE game difference and practically the same stats. Also, Pearl's last 3 years total record is 78-37-0 (.678) and Martin's first three is 55-28-0 (.663). Real close. But I know some people hate facts and don't let them get in the way of their thinking. Like I said above " Not that I think that he is the answer for Tennessee's problems but wins are wins"

The facts are Pearl went dancing 6 straight times. Zo 0 for five and counting.

You guys remember when UT hired Martin and a lot of folks were afraid he would leave UT for Purdue? Because he was going to be so successful that Purdue just had to have him.

You comsider Pearl for about 30 seconds. Then you realize it's program suicide when he gets loose with the NCAA again and you have to look elsewhere.

I really do understand why people would want him back, but from a realistic standpoint, I just don't think you can let that happen if you're in the administration of the school that his actions caused turmoil in in the first place. I just don't think we have to roll the dice on the downside of Pearl to achieve results that we want.

You don't rehire people you've fired unless you're a bi-polar flake like George Steinbrenner. That isn't the only case I've seen though. Bobby Cox was fired by Ted Turner in the 70's only to be rehired by him in the late 80's as a GM. The thing about the Braves though is Ted admitted later that firing Bobby was hard, he just felt like he had to at the time. You just don't see it that much. Pearl will not be rehired. That ship's smoke is barely visible on the horizon. It's gone.
