Basilio should never question coaching decisions

About a year and a half or so into Barnes’s tenure he started counting every day that went by without him getting a 4 star recruit. Yves Pons was his first. That was right at the same time he started the crap about Barnes using us as a golden parachute, so I don’t know how you missed it.
I missed it because I wasn’t listening, probably . I listened a lot in the 90’s, early 00’s and then stopped listening to sports radio for the most part. I especially tuned it out during the rough years of UT sports. I heard about the golden parachute stuff and I saw that on his blog or on here that he said it. The last season or so I’ve listened some, but not then. I was out of state for years and just didn’t listen to sports talk. So, that’s how I missed it, I guessed. I don’t recall that part at all. I’m sure it happened, I have always just listened to sports talk sporadically. I can’t handle too much of it. I like Tony on a personal level, however. He absolute does stir stuff up, I think he would admit that. It’s part of the appeal and the job and it works for him. I like him, but not a huge fan of the show anymore because it is a lot about stirring it up and being dramatic. I just don’t see why many seem to have such strong dislike for the guy. I get not liking the show, but just don’t listen. Not sure why it’s so trendy to flame him all the time. I just don’t listen much b/c it’s not my thing, but I like him personally and appreciate what he’s done for many people here, including myself.

I don't listen to any Knoxville radio, but I do read his blog most every day. I think he has good content, interesting observations, and a little inside info. The blog isn't perfect, but it's better than most I've read.

I’m a big fan of his show, but if he’s absent (like tonight) it’s pretty un listenable. No offense.

I just don't get it. You have a Jimmy Hyams who's called a mouth pieces for the University and fans don't want that.
Then there's TB who stirs the pot with tongue in cheek for entertainment, fans don't want that either.
Then there's a faction of the fans that want Mike Keith back in Knoxville, this bunch seem to fawn over Keith like middle school girls.
Fans are funny.... Fanatics ...

Ok? He was critical of Barnes recruiting, so what?

I find that most here hang on every word Ainge and Swain say, I like Swain but Ainge, not so much. I love Tony B. hes not afraid to say the quiet part out loud.

Yes, that’s what it is and that’s why so many people listen anytime he goes on. That’s why he does 6 hour shows after football games(which I can’t listen to because it’s exhausting as is most sports talk to me). I get annoyed when I listen, but I realize what it is and I know what he does for the community. He talks about it because he solicits help with some of it. Not sure that’s “patting himself on the back”. He does try to credit the “radio family” for how they respond. He gives the people what they want. The guy does what it takes to keep going, and it’s worked 30 years. It amuses me how people that hate him seem to always know what he’s saying, which means they listen. I’d also say that people need to be careful about what they say/post about guys that are very open and transparent about their depression/mental health struggles. You never know what people are dealing with in general, but in some cases, people let us know, so we need to keep that in mind. I need to do better about that myself. Tony is someone that he been open with his struggles in that regard. That has helped me in many ways.

Yeah, they guys is hard worker and loves the vols. You think 99.1 would have callers that are critical of the team? Very rarely.

He did, he also acknowledged that Barnes started getting top talent and is very supportive of Barnes

Ignorant post. You'll never hear only one side of a discussion like you would on the sports animal. Those guys are the state run radio. Don't be dumb

I will admit I have not listened to him in a while, but he is responsible for ALL the content and his serial GUESTS have been given a platform to share their point of view. WIsh we had a good offering out there. Not a fan any of them. But I do believe that the 99.1 guys have to apply more constraint and filters due to having upstream oversight. He is only constrained by FCC and review of his balance sheet. But people evidently still listen to Jim Rome and Stephen A. and others in the national market. Oh well. The National Inquirer has outlasted many outlets with better objectives. I don't click on their stuff either. Still can't believe the SEC network allows Finebaum to continue to feature his invited off the wall caller list either.

Tony is entertaining and he allows his callers much more room than 99.1. Angie is a robot, ( I don't care if he played qb, he sucks) I think Tony tries to be accurate and he'll admit when he's wrong. No question he loves UT, he also loves a good circus feel to his show sometimes.

And Basilio admitted he was wrong, so what. Dont listen to him if he hurts your feelings

Honestly I don't TB was wring about Barnes at the time, if you're getting paid a lot of money, you need to getting top tier recruits. It took Barnes some time, Tony acknowledged it

He thought Grant Williams, Kyle Alexander, and Jordan Bone weren’t good enough because some fat guy in a suit only put 3 stars by their names. This was AFTER it was already obvious that Grant was much better than he was ranked.

My favorite too. I listen to all of them, but some take themselves WAY TOO serious!
The fan run guys just have fun.

I’ll listen to WNML when there’s something big in the news happening. Even though Hyams had a huge swing and a miss on Jeff Brohm before the Pruitt hire, they are usually the most accurate source. Basilio is interesting in that he’ll throw a lot of rumor and innuendo out - but you just have to understand that and not accept it all as factual. Russell W is somewhere in the middle.

He has people on his show, two regulars specifically, Beeno and Dr. Sinclair who can intelligently discuss sports. As for B himself, he is there for entertainment purposes and sponsorship. If you know anything about radio, you have to tip your hat to someone who has made it on his own, been on the air as long as he has, and continues to attract bigger and better sponsors. That is as hard as it gets in any profession. That being said, he along with all the other sports talk shows in and around Knoxville, don't know crap about sports when you get right down to it. Unbelieveable any of those clowns actually make a living talking sports lol.
I agree with this. I turned on sport source yesterday and lasted about five minutes. The real sports guys are good to listen to, but the “media” people sound worse, less knowledgeable than fans, very soft!

Hot take...but if he wasn't Tony Basilio originally from Philly and was Billy Joe Millsap originally from Maynardville, he'd generally be liked on this site. He has a strong Philly accent and can have kind of a neurotic, big city disposition that doesn't play well in Knoxville. I think that's where 99% of the dislike comes from. Let's be real - the crowd here on VN doesn't dislike him because he gets things wrong or deals in rumors. We're on a freaking message board.

He's an interesting dude. Tony speculates and spitballs a lot. He's willing to go where state run media won't go, which is the reason I listen to him. If you are a "I heard someone on TV/radio/the internet say something so it must be true" person, then you'll think he's FOS, but he isn't a "just the facts" guy and doesn't claim to be. Outside of football and basketball season, or some kind of specific news event, his show is unlistenable because it is 3 hours of inside jokes and references with his callers, many of whom I think he knows personally. But during seasons and particularly the fan reaction shows are entertaining; just take the show for what it is worth.
