Basketball Coaching Rumor Mill Heating Up...

A school with no recruiting base wouldn't be very smart to hire him.

We are hearing that Texas assistant Rodney Terry will be named the next head coach at Fresno State. Terry just finished his 9th season on Rick Barnes’ bench.

- We are told that "It’s all but done" for BYU AC Dave Rice to be the next HC at UNLV. Interviews are just a formality. However several UNLV boosters and administrators are angry that Reggie Theus is not the man.

- Word out of Memphis is Josh Pastner will try to hire Kentucky AC Rod Strickland.

- The issue of money and support is the main topic down in Miami.
Opening the door for the likes of Kansas AC Joe Dooley, Kentucky AC Orlando Antingua and Texas AC Russ Springmann. It has been reported Miami wants to hire an minority. FAU HC Mike Jarvis is still a possibility. We are told that if Jarvis does make a move, his entire staff will go with him.Sources tell us that that Orlando Antigua would try to hire an in-state guy like Matt Eisele.

- We are told that Scott Padgett will get the Manhattan job if LIU HC Jim Ferry turns it down.

- South Carolina AC Orlando Early will join the staff at NC St. Word is that Monte Towe is lobbying to stay on but it seems unlikely. Iowa St AC Bobby Lutz could be brought aboard.

- Former Tennessee ASHC Tony Jones is lobbying for the Eastern Michigan job. Add Toledo HC Stan Joplin, former Utah HC Jim Boylen and Texas Southern HC Tony Harvey to the mix as well.

- Former Tennessee AC Jason Shay has interviewed for the DIII Monmouth College job.

Not real surprising.

It looks like Miami will name a new head coach in the next few days. Acting AD Tony Hernandez and search committee chairman Paul DiMare have recently met with Parker Executive search to narrow the names down. The coaches currently in the mix are:

University of Alabama-Birmingham head coach Mike Davis

Murray State head coach Billy Kennedy

Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker

Richmond head coach Chris Mooney

Former Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel

Former Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey

Also, indications are that Kansas State head coach Frank Martin has not been interviewed. It sounds like Miami can not afford him. Also, FIU head coach Mike Jarvis, Alabama head coach Anthony Grant, and Central Florida head coach Donnie Jones have also been mentioned, but are not believed to be in the top six.

This could be done by Monday or Tuesday.

A lot of people in Indianapolis are saying that Lickliter will be back coaching in Indy....IUPUI this time.

- Names that I’ve heard as possible assistants at UNLV are former Runnin’ Rebel Stacey Augmon and San Diego State assistant Justin Hutson. Augmon was the 9th pick in the 1991 draft and played 15 seasons in the NBA. He is currently an assistant with the Nuggets.

- Bacari Alexander - Assistant coach Michigan. Just finished his first season at Michigan. Before that, was an assistant at Western Michigan – in the MAC – same league as EMU. Has also worked at Ohio and Detroit.

Dane Fife - Head coach Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne. 82–97 in six seasons at IPFW. Former Mr. Basketball in Michigan (1998). Played at Indiana.

Cornell Mann – Former assistant Dayton. Not going to Georgia Tech with Brian Gregory. Is in the mix for a number of HM assistant jobs. Knows the league – he played in the MAC at Akron and coached at Western Michigan and Central Michigan.

Tony Jones – Former assistant Tennessee. A Michigan native. Has been an assistant at Tennessee, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Toledo. Was 5-3 at the helm of the Volunteers this season during Bruce Pearl’s suspension.

Stan Joplin – Former head coach at Toledo. Was 202-156 in 12 seasons at the helm. Was the MAC Coach of the Year in 2007.

Todd Lickliter - Former head coach Iowa. Was also the head coach at Butler, and an assistant at EMU before that. He is 169-119 in 9 seasons as a head coach.

Jay Smith - Assistant coach Detroit Mercy. Coached Central Michigan for nine years and was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year after leading CMU to regular season titles in both 2001 and 2003. His 2003 squad won a school-record 25 games en route to the MAC Tournament championship. Also spent time as the head coach at Grand Valley State and served as an assistant at Kent State and Michigan.

Dwayne Stephens - Assistant coach Michigan State. A Michigan native who has been on Tom Izzo’s staff for the past 8 seasons. Played at MSU and has worked at Marquette and Oakland.

Jeff Tungate - Associate head coach Oakland University. Another Michigan native. Has also served as the head coach at Lincoln Memorial University (60-74 5 seasons) and the associate head coach at IPFW

Miami officials were in Boston yesterday to interview Harvard head coach Tommy Ammaker. Multiple sources are reporting that Miami has made an offer to Ammaker and he is currently mulling his options. A decision is expected within the next day or so.

- The search at Eastern Michigan is continuing. From what I've heard, at least two possible candidates have turned down the opportunity to interview. Texas Southern head coach Tony Harvey, and former Utah head coach Jim Boylen have both said thanks, but no thanks. Neither will interview for the position. I still believe the next coach will come from my original list:

- New UNLV head coach Dave Rice is making more progress on his staff. He's already hired San Diego State assistant Justin Huston and offered one of his spots to Nuggets assistant Stacey Augmon. It appears that former UNLV assistant and current Moberly CC head coach Jay Spoonhour is on the short list. He and Rice worked together on Charlie Spoonhour's staff at UNLV in the early 2000's. Also, Findlay Prep head coach Michael Peck was the video coordinator on that staff. Rice may be trying to find some type of role for him on his staff as well.

- The search at Kennesaw State continues. From what I've heard, there were 120 applicants, and it has been narrowed to 10. The next step is to narrow it to three and hopefully have a new head coach in place soon. The names that keep popping up are Belmont associate head coach Casey Alexander, former Georgia Tech head coach Robert McCullum and local HS coach Greg Matta. Also, an interesting name has begun to surface. Former Appalachian State head coach Kevin Cantwell is apparently pretty involved here. He was also a long-time assistant to Bobby Cremins at Georgia Tech, and has most recently worked as the head coach at Carolina Day School.

I think you should know something in the next week in regard to Kennesaw. I spoke to someone who said there should be movement very soon and Belmont's Casey Alexander is very much involved.

It's like a major record label signing the Baha Men five year after "Who Let The Dogs Out?". Larranaga will regret the move within a year.

That is a great comparison. This will end up putting him into early retirement.
