Basketball Coaching Rumor Mill Heating Up...

Miami should thank Missouri for taking Haith off of their hands and take this opportunity to make a serious coaching upgrade. Cliff Warren would be perfect there.

- All signs point to Pat Knight to be the choice at Lamar. Expect a press conference today.

- USC associate head coach Bob Cantu interviewed for the UC-Davis job on Saturday in Houston. He has not interviewed yet at Fresno State.

- Hot name at Miami right now is Kansas State head coach Frank Martin (shocker). He is a Miami native who coaches HS basketball in Miami for 15 years. I’ve also heard Florida Atlantic head coach Mike Jarvis’ name floated around the Miami job.

- A few weeks ago we told you that UConn HC Jim Calhoun may retire at the end of the year. Now other sources are confirming that is a real possibility. Word is that he would get $1 million one time or $300k a year for 5 years to stay as a consultant.

- Miami targets appear to be Jeff Capel, Mark Gottfried, Reggie Theus, and Delonte Hill. The salary situation pretty much eliminates Frank Martin and Anthony Grant from the job. Darkhorse here is Charlton Young because he is from Miami and is strong in the south and would take it for the money. Florida Atlantic HC Mike Jarvis, UCF HC Donnie Jones and Florida St AC Stan Jones are among the others rumored to be candidates.

- We are told that BYU AC Dave Rice still remains in the lead position at UNLV. He met with the AD in Houston. Reggie Theus will interview very soon. A third darkhorse candidate is St. John's AC Mike Dunlap. A hire will be made this week.

- Cincinnati HC Mick Cronin has reached an agreement on a 3-year contract extension at $1.25 million a year through 2016-17.Mt. St.

- Some sources have NC St looking at St. Mary's HC Randy Bennett, BYU HC Dave Rose and Texas A&M HC Mark Turgeon. We believe those names are a stretch. Word is that Mark Gottfried is emerging.

- Word is that Louisville AC Steve Massiello interviewed at Manhattan last week. Word is that he is content to wait for Western Kentucky to open next year.

- Southern U. is looking for a new HC and may be looking for an AD as well, after he was arrested in Houston for soliciting a prostitute.

Massiello won't be getting the WKU job next year unless there's a massive failure on the court and attendance is non-existant. McDonald just signed a 4 year extension this off-season.

He did, but from what I understand in the details of the contract, it was much like the 6 year extension McNabb signed with the Redskins. We are giving you X amount of years, but next year is where you have to prove yourself or you're gone. If next year is another debacle, the buyout terms are cheap as hell, from what I gather.

All the better for me then. The guy needs to go, but I'll give him a year with next years class coming in.

For the Kennesaw St fan...

Kennesaw State -

Casey Alexander, Belmont assistant (see above)

Greg Matta - Head coach North Cobb Christian School. A former Kennesaw State assistant. Brother of Ohio State head coach Thad Matta.

Robert McCullum - Former assistant Georgia Tech. Spent one season on Paul Hewitt's staff. Has 27 seasons of coaching experience, McCullum’s resume includes jobs as head coach at Western Michigan (2000-03) and South Florida (2003-07).

I have also heard Augusta State head coach Dip Metress and Georgia assistant Phillip Pearson mentioned here, but not sure how involved they are.

There are four finalists for the vacant UNLV job. They are:

Ernie Kent - Former head coach Oregon

Mike Dunlap - Associate head coach St. John's

Dave Rice - Associate head coach BYU

Reggie Theus - Assistant coach Minnesota Timberwolves

UNLV director of athletics Jim Livengood will have final interviews with these four, and have a decision very soon.

I think Kent would actually be a decent fit at UNLV. He should be able to recruit there, and his success as a coach is contingent on that. He doesn't coach players up.

If UNLV hires Ernie Kent, Tark should lead a mob over to Thomas & Mack to burn the place down.

Why? I mean, he's not an incredible coach, but he will excel at recruiting.

Kent's an imbecile. Take out a couple of decent 'AA runs and he's Wade Houston. The fact he's gone begging for every D-I job open west of Oklahoma this year and nobody's hired him isn't coincidence.

Can't remember the site but I read an article that made him sound very Fulmer like... talking up mid-majors if it was a place he could win etc.
